ATR or B 737 Rating..?

After quite some time of not getting any job offers I am thinking about buying a type rating....and I would like some advice as to what may be the more appropriate.

I have 2200 hours Total time, 1800 Mutli turbine, JAA fATPL, UK CAA MCC certificate of exemption.

Would I be more employable with just the type rating on the ATR than the 737?

Or would the 737 be more attractive to potential employers?

Comments please...

There are far more 737 operators around than ones using ATRs, plus the 737 market is where the growth is.

I would guess an ATR rating *might* be cheaper, but the name of the game is getting a job, it's got to be the 737.

If you did get a job on an ATR, it's likely to be a relatively crummy one, whereas if you choose the 737, you have a fighting chance of it being a good one.

Either way it's a risky way to get further into debt.

Some current prices for sefl funded types.
ATR42 at SkyBlue STG£18,000 (approx 27K Euro)
737 3/4/5 with Parc Eur27500(linked to Air Asia deal but I am pretty sure if you wanted to just go for a 73type without AA selection then you could do so.

Same price!
Just looking a flight Intl job adverts over past few weeks. Heaps more ATR offers than 737 with zero time.

Just some thoughts to help you think a little before commitment!

Who have been putting out ATR/737 offers with zero time?!?

(I must have been asleep!) :{

I´ve only seen ATR ads i FI for captains (and a single one for f/o´s), so I can´t really agree with you, global pilot.

An ATR rating i Denmark with Danish Air Transport (DAT) costs around 170.000 DKK (£15.000) including tickets, hotels etc. I took that one and got a job with them right after. :o) Check out www.ppjn.com for more info on DAT. -A very good course and for me it was of course worth the money.. :o)

The 737-rating, though, in my eyes, has a lot more potential, since there are a lot more well-pad jobs on the 737 around.

Good luck!

Well.... Brrii..on,

Yep think you'll need a rating to get the interest, think with your experience on TP's an ATR rating would be good as Aer Arann seem to be recruiting lots of people of late...

hi SC
Forget ATR or 737... if you are going to spend any money on a type-rating it should be on the A320 series. Airbus now accounts for the vast majority of new aircraft deliveries, esp. with low-cost carriers, not just in Europe but also in the USA and Far East.
Read this weeks Flight International. Also check out the A320 thread on this forum.
How's the sandpit?

:ok:

ps are you in touch with Gerund?

bushboy 30th Nov 2004 22:59

Jelly doughnut is right

forget about the 737rating. I have 1500 tot, 1200 multi, 900 multiturbine, 737rating and no job. Lots of companies are hiering airbus pilots with little or no hours on type and pretty much all the companies hiering 737 drivers ask for 500 or the verry least 200h line. my advise is don't pay for your type until you have a jobcontract signed. if you are going to get a type without a job lined up, go for the airbus. good luck

Does anyone know anything about Hubair. They are offering 737-300 type rating course for 14 500 € + Vat.
www.hubair.be

How much does a320 type rating cost.

concordino 5th Dec 2004 17:45

From what i gather, they use CAE's facilities and i have heard the instructors are to a good standard.

It is only a matter of time before prices start coming down, check an earlier post about somewhere in Germany, where a 737-800 type rating is in the range of 13000 Euros.

IRISHPILOT 5th Dec 2004 18:52

have a look at this thread for some more prices.

CSA does the ATR too.

prices in the US have been below USD10000 for many years, so it was about time they came down here too. A lot of competition, so my guess would be for the 737 ratings to go down, rather than the ATR ones.

Nobody will care where you got the rating, as long as you pass the sim check.

MorningGlory 8th Dec 2004 11:08

Actually SC, forget the 737, ATR or even the A320, give up flying the 1900's move to new york and become a pimp, loads more money and the the company vehicle's are highly recommended...

Have a good one my b*tch.... you home for xmas?

MG.

Jelly Doughnut 8th Dec 2004 12:49

SC
check out the thread about Solenta on the African forum.
Might be the way to go if Europe is your aim -- with some time on type you can unfreeze your JAA license and apply to ATR operators here. Lot cheaper too!

IRISHPILOT 8th Dec 2004 12:59

And of course this JAA TRTO for the ATR.

scientifics 8th Dec 2004 13:06

So what we are saying here is that the author of this thread has loads of hours and no job.

It certainly does not look good if you are planning to get into the industry like me.
