French licensing policy (French JAR-FCL).

Dear all,

I still can't believe it. Are you guys, holders of a UK JAR licence, allow to fly a Foxtrot (French) registered aircraft?

Apparently, we, Spaniards, are not allow to, we can't fly with our JAR licence in France. It seems that only a JAR licence issued in France is acceptable for them. Always looking the rest over the shoulder I'm afraid.

Ok, I can understand that for TRE signing purposes the licence should/could be transferred to the national JAR one, but in this particular case, a Spanish pilot's application form was dismissed because of his/her JAR licence.

I know that here in Spain there are quite a few UK gents flying EC registered aircraft for Iberia, Spanair... etc, as well as Spaniards flying for UK carriers like Thomas Cook or Brithish Airways.

In my personal opinion, that's the way all the JAA should be like.

What do you guys and gals think about this?

Cheers :ok:

Hi BarajasGuy,

I am exactly in the same situation as yours. I received the same letter from Air France a couple of months ago. However France is not in a position to refuse you from flying on Foxtrot registered aircraft as it would go against the principle of the JAA . They made it more subtle by asking you to contact the DGAC in order to have your Spain issued JAR license recognised under their "french" standards .

you will need to fill in a dossier with all proof of JAR training done in spain. They will then issue you with a "french" JAR license ! It 's definitely a pain in the neck but I know few people who did it and now fly Foxtrot registered aircrafts. I suggest that you call Mrs Corboliou on +33 1 58 09 44 49 in order to get an application form.

good luck, SF

Hello !

Well, I'm a french student pilot, and untill a few month ago I intended to go to the UK to do my training. A lot of people told me, "don t you go there unless you never want to fly a Fox taile".

nevertheless, I called the DGAC, asked for the person in charge of licencing and told me the following :
- if you go to the UK and pass your licences there, if you want to go back to france you have to go via the DGAC. If the training was done 100% with a Golf taile, there is normally no probleme for the validation. For those who would have done a part of the training in a non JAR country (like the US, for exemple), then the result in quite unsure, and they should revalidate their licences within a french FTO.

Hope this helped you!

I know the feeling. It only took me 12 month to get my JAR licence approved by the french authority. And I'm asking myself whether it's worth renewing it (as it's just expired), knowing the market situation in France and EASA (?).
Funny that I seem to remember France was one of the instigators (if not the only one) of JAR back in the late 80's.

Hiya,
Had the same problem with my JAR PPL (although it is not a commercial licence, I know)...
The CFI at the club where I wanted to rent an aircraft was saying I could only fly with an instructor...=Total nonsense....!
After a long debate, after arguing that in the privileges section of the licence, it says that you are entitled to fly any aircraft registered in a JAA country, we eventually phoned the regiona district of the DGAC and the woman on the phone said it was OK for me to fly solo with a UK issued JAR PPL....
If I had not insisted, I would have been stuck with an instructor (who was a nice and competent chap, anyway!)
Cheers:)
