Let's say, for the sake of argument, that someone with 2500 hours (1500 on something like a King Air) applied to the CTC ATP scheme. Would this be madness? A short route to instant rejection? Or an eminently sensible idea for a (relatively) experienced pilot who wants a job with EasyJet?

Hey guys,

just for numbers sake I'm in the low 20's and have been in the pool for about 5 months Some of the cadets I did the AQC with were ranked about 170th in their pool and have been called up for TR. I think the pool was at 220 (cadet pool) when I was there so there has definitely been big movement over the last few months.

Just to answer about the 2500hr King Air pilot. To be honest if that was me I would stay well clear of the ATP pool as there is no seniority order with hours, you'll have to do the whole AQC course, spend 6k, wait for god knows how long(.....if ever) before waiting to get the call for Easy and then pay an extra 8k or so for the TR. But hey if your in no rush for a job and as desperate as the low houred cadets then go for it.

I know that probably this is a topic already discussed above, but
could someone do a summary and tell me what is the ATP for the CTC?
My case is frozen ATPL with MCC and about 200 flight hours: I have to apply for
the ATP?
How does it work? If you pass the selections then they put you in a holding pool ... ?
On the website it says that they call you if there are no more cadets available, is it right?
Thank you and sorry for any repetition of the argument.

Hi all

Maybe a stupid question, but if you do the AQC with CTC, do you have to wait to be located to one of their partner airlines, or could you apply to others?

Genuine question

Can someone who has NOT paid £8,400.00 inc VAT for the CTC AQA scheme apply to easy jet or others directly? I have heard its a great course but this is a very expensive course compared to Oxford etc.

1) They therefore offer a holding pool position which costs about £4,000.00 -Am I being fair saying that?

2) Who are CTC's clients

I was under that impression too, but looking at the current list of people (cadets and ATPers) in the hold pool, they are interspersed. Given that there has been a hold pool purely of wings cadets since 2009, the quoted statement wouldn't seem true...

In fact, there are some ATPers starting the easyJet type rating in the next couple of weeks amongst other wings cadets.

Once you're in the hold pool you should get a copy - it seems one gets released every couple of months. Failing that, check with CTC.

99jolegg, thanks for that. Would you be able to tell us how long the couple of ATP cadets that are starting their TR in a couple of weeks have had to wait?

Ok here goes, ill try chip in with what i know. Last i heard which was at the beginning of December I was number 19 in the ATP holding pool, im hoping that has changed.

If you are a low hour Frozen ATPL pilot then ctc offer hope via the ATP scheme. I have nothing but praise for them, they make it very clear on the deal thats offered, and well the AQC is not easy but will train and prepare you for a type rating, the instructors are quality. Your other option is ryanair, they took about £250 from me and turned me down without any feedback, strange that cause i though it went well. To rub salt in the wounds they email 6 months later asking if you want to come pay another £250 for another selection. In my opinion that's not right enough sed.

If you have to sit 1-2 years in a holding pool, thats not bad if you think about it, no one sed it would be easy. I currently work for easy jet and i can say that they have taken on a shed load of pilots and that is going to continue touch wood.

The oxford deal may as good as offer you a job before any interviewn, but after paying 80k on flight training you need a further 35k present in your accout before you can even go for the interview.

Id go the CTC route, but thats just me, if your patient and willing to keep trying it may just work out....

My mole tells me that the CTC hold-pool of swimmers back from NZ has shrunk considerably. With several cadets leaving 'Partner' airlines with only 6 months or so under their belt, to join other airlines offering permanent contracts, there will be further demands on the pool and the pipeline to NZ supplying it.

Can anyone else confirm this is the case and people within the ATP pool have started to be type rated? Good news for many if true.

Are they actually cadets from the ATP pool? Because there were some ATP mixed in with the cadet pool (from the ranked lists I've seen) who are not from the ATP pool??

Dangerman, thats what I suspected. I'm sure CTC would be delighted to let all the ATP cadets know they are pulling from the pool if that was indeed the case.

However I am yet to hear anything of the sort.

You need to differentiate here chaps...
  1. There is the "new" ATP pool which CTC will draw upon as and when their Cadet pool is empty.
  2. And there is the "old" ATP pool; the members of which CTC have grouped along with the Cadets in equal standing.
It might sound confusing, but actually very simple. CTC only ever had ATP pilots when they started, thereafter they started training pilots themselves (ab initio onwards) which became their primary offering in due course. However, they continued taking advanced pilots (who'd completed their CPL/ME/IR and MCC elsewhere but passed their selection processes) and ranking them alongside their Cadets up until last year or so (can't remember exactly). At that point, any new ATP/elsewhere-trainined-pilots were clearly informed that they will only be called up as and when their Cadet pool (and "original/old" ATP remanant pilots) has been exhausted.

The guys who are currently doing their easyJet TR are from the "old" ATP pool... I know because I'm one of them.

FlyBoyFryer, how long have you had to wait to be type rate then?

As far as I know the new terms (not placed until the cadet pool has been exhaused) has been in place from when CTC opened for ATP applications in April 2009.

Thanks alot for that post. You have finally answered a question that's been bugging me for a while. Even CTC wouldn't answer where the equally ranked ATP guys were from. Looks like I got to CTC a year or two too late

These two statements don't seem to add up. If the pool where the ATP cadets are equally ranked stopped operating in 2009 I don't see why FlyBoyFryer has only just begun his type rating. Surely this would mean he has the same seniority as pre April 2009 cadets and would have gone thought the system a long time ago with them?

Highland Kilt: No, both statements are correct, the devil is in the detail. I, like many others, have simply had to be patient. 2009 was awful for many of us. So we've not gone through the system as yet, instead we're doing so...

Dangerman: Chin up, old chap. Things are looking much improved now and even WWW (WeeWeasleyWelshman - look him up within PPRuNe if you don't know) has said as much... and I personally wouldn't bet against his statements/predictions. Against the odds, CTC have still placed a large amount of pilots in the past two years and if current demand/growth continues you're in with a good company whose reputation counts for a huge amount.

Plinky: I first began my selection process with CTC in Feb 2008... so yes, it's been a while. In between now and then, I've occupied myself elsewhere, bided my time, kept my hand in and even become a father... so life goes on. I respectfully declined an offer some time ago (personal reasons) and intend to take them up on the next one sometime soon.

Overall, CTC remain a committed, progressive and undoubtably prestigious organisation with established airline partnerships. If you show loyalty to them, meet their requirements and the market conditions are supportive to us all, things work out. That's not a PR slogan but the truth, I feel.
