AirBaltic

Hello guys, I have a question concerning AirBaltic assessment, for who already took it, or who is already in, or for anyone who knows something.
I have been invited by AirBaltic for an assessment, after having passed the online tests.
I have a question, because something sounds strange to me:
Although I'm not an experienced pilot, I'm rated on the 320, current, with 600h on type and almost 1000TT.
Even though I'm not rated on the A220, (therefore I suppose to be considered as NTR), I will do the Sim assessment on a Diamond DA42 (FNTPII), single pilot operation.
Usually the FNTPII is used for candidates with no TRs at all, or with no commercial flight experience, does it look alright to you ?
Then we come to the second question: coming from the A320, will there be another TR to be on my expenses, in case of a successful interview ?
Very last question: What is the Managment Interview ?

Thank you guys, I appreciate a lot your help.

Hey! I did all my fATPL training with airBaltic and have started the TR on the A220 recently, so I'm sure I can give you some insights on what's going on and maybe address some of your concerns.
The DA42 sim is quite common - the reason is honestly fairly simple - mainly the fact that the A220 is just always completely booked out. There is only one A220 simulator currently, many MCC guys and TR guys are making some use of it and it's running 24/7, even during nighttime, so there is hardly any time for applicants to go in there and do their assessment. On the other hand, the DA42 sim is currently free as most guys are either still in their VFR or theory phases, so it has a lot more capacity. Therefore yes - it's all good and I've met a bunch of candidates who had their assessment in the DA42, even highly experienced people with hours well into the 1000s.
About the TR on the A220 - If I'm not mistaken, it's free. Not some loan by airBaltic or anything that you pay off later, no, it's fully paid by airBaltic and you'll have no additional costs besides living and all that stuff, of course.
The management interview is pretty much just what it says - an interview with the management, after passing all other stages successfully, to have a last clear impression of you, asking you a bunch of questions about your life, your flying experience and all that good stuff. Nothing to really stress about, most people say that they found the atmosphere very pleasant and friendly.

Hope I could help you out a bit, good luck!

Thank you very much, I appreciate a lot your insight.
May I ask you about life in Riga, not necessarily related to the costs, concerning the people, social life, culture, environment.
I heard very good things, and I will make my evaluation in the case I'll be successful.
Thanks

Well, it really depends on how you design your social life and what you want to make of it, honestly.
I didn't have a whole lot of time to explore, meet friends etc. as I was quite busy with flight training and now type rating - things are moving very quickly and it's a bit stressful, so of course life besides flying barely exists at the moment. However what I did see so far, was quite nice. People in the Baltics are quite cold and introverted in general, however there is a huge difference in people that fly for a living, as many of them are either internationals or spend a lot of time with internationals and therefore kind of have to be a bit more social. This helps a lot and usually if you ask someone in your group or company, some of your colleagues etc., they will absolutely be down to do something in town or help you with something if you're struggling. The city center is nice and the city itself is quite small, so commutes are pretty short and quick. Airport - city center is around 30 mins by bus, by car it's probably 15-20. Rent prices aren't as low as many people would've expected but still totally fine, even in the city center they're affordable, although most pilots prefer living closer to the airport.
Overall living cost is quite cheap, social life consists of mostly colleagues, cabin crew and flight crew as it is pretty difficult to talk to locals outside the aviation business. Then again, it doesn't seem to be a problem for most people and they enjoy life. Home leave is also possible, so if you want to go to your country every now and then, it's very much possible to do that - if you have time in the schedule, that is.

They also ask to be experienced on EFIS but recently hired people who were flying LET410 or SAAB340 before
Don't seem so strict in requirements, I would suggest you to apply

well, SAAB is efis equipped 13t mpa, with enough of sectors/hours is sufficient for ZFTT on any other type.

How can it be EFIS aircraft without an EICAS? And ZFTT has nothing to do with EFIS, is 500 hrs ( wondering why airbaltic is asking 300 hrs) on aircraft above 10 tons but extra training is required if transitioning from a prop to jet. But the guy is asking if they are strict with the requirements they publish. Answer is simply no, they also hired recently an Italian guy with zero experience on passenger aircrafts and he wasn’t a military pilot either. We shouldn’t discourage people from applying cause of requirements which are quite elastic

1. Just google “saab 340 EFIS” and you will see
2. I did not mention any connection between EFIS and ZFTT. Its not just 500h on any type of ac, you can google the regulation as well.
3. “Extra training “ from prop to jet is not applicable, at least wasn’t for me.

We should open a new thread about which aircrafts are considered EFIS. I don’t know if there is any legal definition. As I wrote before, SAAB isn’t equipped with an EICAS, I checked photos there are mechanical gauges instead. But has CRT PFD. I don’t know the percentage of electronic instruments for an aircraft to be considered EFIS. Ideas for new threads…
For airbaltic’s requirements that people ask…
They also hired this period a Czech guy who was flying a LET410, that’s not an EFIS for sure. Maybe someone will say that if you install an ipad in LET410 cockpit might be considered as EFIS, at least for airbaltic hiring team.
They also hired an Italian guy with 0 hours on aircrafts above 5,7 tones.
But on requirements they ask EFIS and 300 hrs on airplanes above 5,7 tones.
I don’t know if the guys who ask in this thread can just apply without having these requirements or not. Maybe in a post soviet country the soviet mentality remains and is enough to know the right people to skip something. Maybe they are just not so strict.
I any case I think they should apply

Ha! Maybe that is the real reason they do the assessments on a prop sim
It's not the soviet mentality, it's a bad company mentality, you can find it in every corner of the planet.
They treat the pilots like sh#t and who are no any longer bonded and able to leave have already started leaving in after covid situation.
Company will find others to replace them even if they have to ignore the minimum requirements that they have set and now there is no time to wait for some company to collapse so to find qualified but desperate pilots. An airbaltic A220 skidded off after landing in Riga with 6 kt of wind, seems that didn't ring any bell

It is quite embarrassing to taxi off the runway especially in your home base but I don’t agree that is a bad company. They could do more to keep the good pilots instead off cancelling their own requirements to find new ones to replace them. Maybe is cheaper that way. It’s not the best company but is not bad either, I have seen worse

And I was wondering why they failed me since I performed well. “Hey upper management, jet pilots fail, we need to invite also the ones who don’t meet the requirements published on our webpage”
Now I can laugh about it, since just recently I passed another assessment for a company with commuting roster and better salary, not bad at the end of the day
You should send them some flowers for being such clowns. Otherwise you would get stuck in Riga till 2026, instead of the commuting roster job you got

Saab 340 is a 1. generation of EFIS. Pretty much the same as in atr and very similar to 737 classic.
The gauges may look like mechanical but most of them are fully driven by ADC.
Regarding the L410, new versions are full glass cockpit and there are fairly affordable conversions available for the older ones. I remember flying with a guy who was introducing those conversions to one of the l410 operators.

So any aircraft could have been converted to EFIS.
