And then there will the EU going to pot.

The war with Iran will kick off.

The EU carbon will kick in.

And the goverment will run out of cash again and knob about with the flight tax.

O and there maybe another 9/11 type episode.

If none of that happens the plan may come to be.

Hi guys,

Another first time poster here. I've been following this thread and the fpp fairly closely since the start, with great interest.

I'm curious to know if anyone knows of any internal candidates for the fpp, or perhaps even was an internal candidate?

Are they welcome to apply? How would BA see this? Good/bad etc.

Cheers guys

I'm aware of a couple of succesful internal candidates that will be starting this year. Certainly on speaking to them they didn't mention any problems from BA, but I dare say they'll PM you if they're on here.

Thanks jhr187, good for them.

All PM's are certainly welcomed.

Do you think internal candidates will be at any kind of advantage, as BA already know they have, at least some of, the qualities they are looking for?

Yes, Mad Jock, all of the above may indeed happen, however aviation will not grind to a halt for long, people will still want to travel, and rear-ends will be required to flatten the sheepskin up front for a while yet. Some of us have been through, indeed, TRAINED through similar to your list, and are gainfully employed to this day, albeit with a few blips on the employment ECG.

By the way, you left out "Global Pandemic" and "Major Asteroid Strike," assuming you want to differentiate between an asteroid and a comet, that is?

They may have advantages in that they have access to plenty of information and employees for research, but they will still have to pass all the hurdles to the same degree as the others. They won't be treated favourably just because they work for BA.

At least I hope not...

if we are getting into natural disasters

Yellowstone going bang
Another volcano in iceland.
BA A380 fleet coming online.

could be added to your list.

Its just time scale when it will all sort itself out and for that matter what comes out the other end. I personally think it will go down then come back up again. 2014 we will still be in the brunt of a re-adjustment of the industry.

Yeah, I'm sure you're right.

Anyway, thanks for your replies.

PS. If there are any internal candidates on the fpp this year I would love to hear from you via PM

This program really is infuriatingly enticing, yet appears to be grossly oversubscribed and therefore will probably fold before I graduate from university.... Rather than irritate the powers that be on this board with an aimless "when are the closing dates?" question, I was wondering how long similar ab-initio programs (with the exception of Lufthansa's perpetual one) have tended to last... Surely it's more cost effective for BA to simply pick up direct entry pilots given the current economic climate? Is there a realistic chance of the fpp scheme continuing past 2014 once BA's fleet expansion is matched by the number of recruited pilots?

All answers are appreciated!

Although DEP pilot recruitment is on hold, I would expect BA to continue with the FPP scheme once the BMI merger and other external factors become more clear to BA. It has been internally stated by flight ops that BA will source the majority of its future pilot intake from the FPP scheme (some 400 pilots).

All FPP are on a reduced salary for a number of years. Therefore, it is cost effective for BA to do this. Furthermore, all FPP graduates go onto the shorthaul fleets which would be more palatable for those individuals than DEPs (who would often join BA for a LH position).

The FPP is not grossly oversubscribed in any way. There were thousands of applicants (approx 3,000) in the first round which opened for applications in 2011.

From these 3,000 about 90 were selected.

BA is looking to source, as no sponsor has noted, 400 pilots via the FPP scheme, which makes up 50% of the 800 pilot shortfall BA sees itself as having.

BA is recruiting these 800 pilots to cover retirements and new fleets coming online, the 400 FPP pilots are cost effective for the reasons no sponsor gave.

If you research and find some of the press releases from when the FPP was announced last year you'll find the exact answers you're looking for - the time frames for the BA FPP.

That's assuming all Ab Initio entrants are young. Not all of us are in our 20's ;-)

No sponser

I would question whether Ab-initios, particularly young ones are cost effective. A 20 year old could work for BA for 45 years spending 11 years on the top pay increment. By recruiting a 40 year old after a period in the military or another airline they will only reach pay point 25 out of 34.

Therefore recruiting 2 DEPs over the period that you could recruit 1 ab-initio is far cheaper in terms of salary and the extra recruiting cost is peanuts. The reduced salary for an Ab-initio at the start is far outweighed by the extra time at the top.

While many DEPs may have a medium term goal of going LH (just like ab-initios I am sure) most are over the moon at just having the opportunity to work for BA due to all the other benefits. At the moment all DEPs are being put on the type for which they have type ratings (if applicable). So if you have a 737 or 320 rating that is probably where you will go and you join knowing this.

Regards

There doesn't seem to be a 'thanking' or 'liking' system here?..

Nonetheless, thank you so much. =)
