Start dates

For those of you waiting to hear about start dates then you'll hear "early next week".

Personally, I don't see the issue with a UK airline providing jobs foremost for the citizens of the UK? Perhaps if each country wasn't fighting to avoid a recession we could afford it, but why waste an opportunity to help our own economy?
The problem with your approach is that the airline industry is an international industry. It would be very interesting to compare the number of non-UK pilots working for UK airlines and the number of UK pilots working for non-UK airlines. I think you will find the balance in favour of UK pilots overall.

Your views will alter with time Jambone. There really is no issue of 'they're taking our jobs' here. The best candidates get the gig, end of story. If a UK national speaks German/French then nothing stops them from applying to Lufthansa/Air France. It works both ways. Aviation is international, you need to be thinking on a global stage and not be insular.

The likelihood is that any foreign national who starts flying for BA is going to be living in the UK and contributing to the economy with their disposable income, paying UK taxes etc. so your point about 'helping our own economy' is moot.

Objection, relevance?! Why wouldn't BA just choose the best candidates they have access to? I'm pretty sure that's what they will have done and what any business would do that wants the be the best.

Bit of a naive finance question, but at what point would BA be required to step in as the guarantor for any loan? If for example you weren't offered a job at the end of training would the bank be able to repossess any of your possessions (ie house), or would you 'default' on the payments once you ran out of money in your bank account?

Not seen the terms and conditions of the scheme + Finance arrangements (which is what really counts), but...

I'd be surprised (from a common sense point of view - for me at least) if they'd guarantee the loan any earlier than when they've got something to lose i.e when dipping their hands in their pocket to pay for the Type Rating and thereafter making a return from you, when you start work.

Reg house, yes in theory this is possible, if it is declared on your loan arrangement as an asset to secure the loan... after all, when people took out mortgages in the past and couldn't pay the money back, the bank just took possession of the house to sell and get their money back!

I applied for FPP via CTC and have heard nothing whatsoever apart from an instant standard acknowledgement in early September after I had applied.

When I log in at British Airways it still shows the status of my application as **Submitted**. There are no more emails in there other than those I received to my external email address.

I was only moved today to think about it again as I thought I noticed a missed call on my landline from an 01234 number (which I recognise as the Cranfield area - Cabair country!!) but my landline number was not given in my application so seeing it has simply jogged me into "I wonder what happened to my application" mode.

Am I simply to assume rejection or ... ?

I believe the whole point of BA acting as guarantor is so that those who are not able to raise the 84,000 deposit themselves are able to do so. Therefore, BA would be acting as guarantor from the start of the loan. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

19 October 2012 at Oxford

Is there a FaceWipe group for us lot?

If anyone else is on that course at OAA, drop me a message! Looks like I'll see you there Chris!

Face-booke group would be good to avoid tonnes of posts here, anyone know how to set one up?

How much input have BA had into the course start dates and how much is down to the courses scheduled by the FTOs? If BA are effectively choosing, maybe the later dates are a result of the impending recession/BMI takeover which they think will reduce their need for pilots for a year or so?

I suppose it makes sense if they want a consistent delivery of pilots over the course of the next few years. Looks like a one starts every couple of months.

Also means some of the guys applying this year will be starting only a couple of months after us.

February 2013 for me too then.

Anyone know of this facebook group?

How much input have BA had into the course start dates and how much is down to the courses scheduled by the FTOs?
BA have outlined when they want the cadets to start to fit into their schedule. APL then took these BA start dates, worked back to course start dates, and then randomly picked candidates to fill them.

If BA are effectively choosing, maybe the later dates are a result of the impending recession/BMI takeover which they think will reduce their need for pilots for a year or so?
The later course dates are merely so that BA get the cadets when they need them and will have the capacity to TR and BT them. There are also other reasons such as the FTOs' need for capacity to continue with non FPP trainees and BA's fleet expansion plans.

The BMI takeover will not affect FPP. The impending recession has been on the horizon for months, I would be incredibly surprised if BA's beancounters hadn't taken it into consideration. A short term recession is unlikely to affect long term growth and replenishment plans, such as the FPP.

Don't worry, it won't do your blood pressure any good for the impending medicals!

Hi guys, does anyone have any idea if/when BA will offer another opportunity like this. I'm 17 and final year of school finishing my A-levels, and haven't applied for UCAS and hoping to apply for a scheme like this. I just don't have a clue if or when it will be offered again! Thanks

Whilst it is likely the FPP will run next year there are no guarantees and no-one knows how large it will be.

I certainly would not place all your eggs in one basket. The scheme is incredibly competitive and the large majority of successful applicants for 2011/12 have degrees and some interesting career experience. Furthermore, there are other schemes with Flybe, CityJet, easyJet etc that I would recommend you looking at in addition to the FPP.
