A*, C, D, in Music, Maths and Physics respectively. What are the chances giving it's a BBC criteria?

Dead side, Id' expect it be a no as the initial criteria are quite specific so without the grades then unfortunately I doubt your application would be looked at past the qualification section.

By the sounds of it however this scheme should be running for a few years, that at least means you have the opportunity to go to evening classes etc and perhaps complete/ re-do another A-level?

Not an easy or quick solution but nothing worth doing is easy or simple.

Smile FPP Qualification

I think one has to look at all of this with a large dose of reality.

The recruiters have sat around the table and come up with those initial qualifications after much discussion. They'll have looked at other airline recruitment schemes and also RAF and military recruitment models. To start with-if you don't have the paperwork you're unlikely to get far.

Years ago when Hamble was recruiting some squeezed in without paper as it was less easy to check on your qualifications. Those days are gone. (Incidentally one of those courses was a Pure Arts A-level entry. Due presumably to being wired differently from the science students they all shone with their different approach to the task).

During a previous BA recruitment drive my nephew applied. He has only 2 A-levels, no maths, due to illness at exam time. Thanks to his school intervening with his university application, he went on to achieve an honours 2:1 in Maths. However as his subsequent BA application showed only 2 A-levels and the rider about a degree wasn't in the previous scheme he didn't get past the first stage which I believe is computer assessed, or someone matching boxes. No amount of pleading nor cajoling was able to change this. There will be thousands of aspirants for this scheme. Of those that get on the course some will fail-more if the economy shows that BA won't need all they've recruited. On my initial course the chop rate was 30%. As You-Tube says " you'll have to be very good".

45+ years ago I believe the entry rate was 1 in 300 interviewees. Fortunately that feedback wasn't available 'on the web' and we simply went along for a day out and to enjoy ourselves, desperately keen to fly though we were. If I'd known of that attrition rate I doubt that I would've applied-even with the paper qualifications under my belt. There has to be some luck in all of this!

If you don't have the qualifications then perhaps this is your first hurdle to show that you really want to join BA and enable you to go back and get your paper so that you may apply at a later date. As mentioned this is the first 'fly-for-free' scheme in years so there will be a rush and BA will be able to be as picky as hell.

At the end of the day though it's merely a few hours of time to fill in the application and a 1st class stamp...what do I know.

I'm going to go the other way and say that it may be acceptable. In terms of A level points, what you have is equivalent. If an A* is 140, A is 120, B is 100 etc... then both A*CD and BBC are worth 280 points.

Of course, my guess is as good as any. Just remember, the one certain rule with the scheme is you have to be in it to win it! Unless you don't have the time at all to put in an application, no harm done.

British Airways Future Pilot Programme

From the website:

Choosing to become a pilot is a life-changing decision as well as a huge financial commitment. Here at British Airways we believe in investing in the future, and that is why we have developed a unique programme to offer anyone with the right skills, passion and potential the chance to realise their dream of becoming an airline pilot.

We’re proud to announce the launch of the Future Pilot Programme – our flagship sponsored pilot training scheme that is designed to select and train aspiring pilots, who currently have little or no flying experience.

We’re seeking only the most able candidates with the determination to rise to the challenges of our comprehensive programme. Once you have successfully completed your training, you can look forward to continuing your journey with one of the world’s leading airlines and taking to the skies as a first officer on one of our London-based short haul fleets.

If you can see yourself expertly navigating one of our aircraft across the globe, delivering world-leading levels of safety, security, and customer service, then the Future Pilot Programme may be for you. Please explore the website for further information about the programme and we very much look forward to receiving an application from you.

I wonder how many will be trained in UK given the heavy cost of 20% VAT on all training costs!
There is no VAT on education/training

FTE at £84,000 + £6,000 + £200 (selection) + c.£2,000 (living costs - excluding food and drink at FTE cover this)
Where do you get your £2000 living cost fee excluding food and drink at FTE from? It is all included, everything except the bar which costs about 60p for a bottle of Heineken at happy hour. South West Spain is dirt cheap and you can get home for ~£30 return if you shop in advance.

I really wish everyone the best of luck with an application to this scheme.

For those that fall short of or just manage the minimum requirements, remember that you will all be competing against RAF pilots who were made redundant only weeks from being moved onto Tornados, they will all be putting their applications in for this with some few hundred hours flying time and most of the ATPL groundschool syllabus theory done. I believe quite a few of the self-sponsored cadets who are already at the likes of FTE and Oxford are applying as well on the off-chance they can be moved over to a sponsored scheme, competition is going to be fierce.

You may find that £2000 for "living costs" is underestimating it slightly.

Yes there is a hell of a lot of hard work to be done, but you will need to get out of the blue gates frequently. £2k equates to approx £33 a week for travel, drink, eating out, toiletries, the "hotel" down the road etc

And about the bar, yes it is cheap and cheaper so at happy hour but it does all add up. Of course if you head down to gib frequently you can save well on drink and cigarettes.

The costs all add up, I spent approx £250 a month and that was being conservative with cash.

Also there are a few things which aren't major expenditures, but if you dont factor in enough of a margin (and aviation is all about factoring in margins) you may find yourself in a bit of a bind. So overestimate your budget and then spend it wisely.

Best of luck to you all in applying etc, here's hoping that eventually they might consider hiring those of us who have already left the production line.

I find the £200 fee for selection very off putting. Factoring in travel/food/accom. that would need to be done it would cost me closer to £350/400.

B.A. say that financial backround is not an issue. I'm afraid unless £400 is something that comes easy to you financial backround will be a factor. That's too much for me unfortunately. If it were £50 possibly but it strikes me as being very Ryanairish...

Aer Lingus, I think, got it right on the button as regards selection so far... They have emailed testing, followed by further assessments inhouse.

Personally I think £200 is a reasonable price to pay for the chance to get your entire training sponsored for you. At the very least it shows a level of commitment and that you are serious about becoming a pilot, rather than someone completing the selection on a whim. Would it be 'nicer' if you didn't have to pay anything? Of course.

This is by far and away the best training scheme you are likely to see for the foreseeable future - and frankly you will end up paying considerably more than £200 if you choose any other training route. Just talk the the ryanair pilots who have to pay for their own type rating...

I agree with the above sentiment about the £200. Yes it is a ball ache but it will deter many people applying on a whim. It isn't a small amount for me to pay being a student with no help from my parents, but I would sooner spend it on the chance of being selected, along with the experience for future such schemes, than on pretty much any other expense it would otherwise go on. They are going to be looking for the most committed, and so you either have to swallow the cost or forget about it.

Just wondering - if I hold f(atpl) and FAA CPL - will they consider me at all? What is little or no experience for them? I think it's quite relative what's little and what's not.

Thumbs up

I was really excited about this untill I realised the selection would cost the same as if you were applying to any of the 3 FTOs. I soupose I'll start saving up £200 for a few months and hopeflly the applications wont of closed by the time I've saved up!

On a different note the fact that BA are sponsoring pilots again does infact mean that pigs have indeed flown and hell has probably frozen over!

I am only making a presumption but I would think BA will only be looking for low hour/experience candidates because they will want to mould them into BA F/O's. Whether or not they will consider people who have trained with one of their three chosen FTO's but are jobless is another question but I doubt it.

As for what they consider "little experience" that's a good question, I would like to know what they think of people who hold a PPL or have done the majority of the training for their PPL. I understand they will probably want to retrain everyone with any experience to get rid of their bad habits.

Do BA Cityflyer share their recruitment process with BA? The website makes no mention of Embraer.

I just happened to come across a link about this scheme on the VATSIM UK forum, talk about right place and time! It would seem the dream is somewhat revived!
