No one of any decent repute will take you on with no real experience on type.

Ask around, loads of people have been shafted in this manner.

Haven't done rating....yet. I'm in the same position altough having 2700tt (mostly turboprop) considering getting a 737/A320 typerating.
Seems most companies require experience on type but its seems some contract companies just require only the rating.

Capt Loko, which contract companies just require the rating & no time on type? I would really love to know, having just completed a 757 rating & being told by all of the contract companies that I would need at least 400 - 500 hours on type.

It's much the same for all of the guys who were training on the B737...you need hours on type.

I'm just basing this knowledge on advertisements from airlines on the contract companies websites. Sometimes these advertisements state some hours required for captains but not first officers.
But haven't looked further than that yet to be honest.

cheers

The plotter,

Mate of mine was interested in completing a 757 type rating, but after talking to nealy every operator of 757/767 and recruitment agents, far as china and vietnam, decided not to go ahead with it. He got the same response as you no way unless got time on type, not even prepared to take the name and number. Seems to think it's more of an insurance issue.

But best of luck to all

Ps. check your pm

Sir Donald

This is not a deliberate attack at anyone.
and

this ‘’Ashtrays are us’’ type scam
are incompatible. Your second statement is a very deliberate attack on Astraeus, and it's TRTO Bond Aviation Solutions.

95% of the students who have undertaken a type conversion are now in fully paid, non-bonded, jet-transport employment. So, the industry people "in the know", seem to have recognised the value of this " scam" as you put it and recruited people into jobs on the basis of it.

I do not want to participate in this ongoing "Pay for type ratings or not" debate. But I must ask you to withdraw your "scam" comment.

SD, you write "hold off for a while" . For how long? Myself and some people I know are on a ramp going down and can fall any moment into bankruptcy.

I can understand people taking an offer to SSTR; if one's not taking it because of some 'noble' intentions then someone else will do it.
In other words; all pilots have to refuse to pay for their own typerating (your sollution). How do you want to organize this?

I think we should be realistic and take it as it is and do the best for yourself and/or the one's you are responsible for. Despite many noble intentions or ideas...

Hamrah doesn t need to prove it. I am one of those 95% and I know first hand of about another 15 like me. Non bonded with 300 hours etc. I say do what you feel is right for you and then stick to it. Good luck to everyone with whatever path they ve chosen.

Can someone give a clue about which A320 operators are hiring Astraeus-trained pilots? Are we talking Easy, Wizz Air and BMI?

1) I know someone who has just completed their rating with AeroMadrid (just waiting to do base check in a couple of weeks in Tenerife), and he said it was fine. So dont worry.

2) If anyone needs to find someone to base check them in/from the UK on the A320, then PM me when you complete groundschool/start the sims.

3) Excel, BMIbaby, Astraeus, Ryanair, and Easyjet, and the UK charter airlines have all taken low houred A320/7327 rated pilots. Also, Eaglejet still seem to find airlines in E Europe and the Far East that want low houred A320-rated pilots prepared to pay for their line training. And a few years ago *everyone* took low houred pilots with no experience on jets.

Words of caution:
- 757, 767 are riskier, given there is a surplus of pilots and impending shortage of planes.
- Being 40+ or having the wrong (arrogant) personality may mean you dont get the job.
- If you still dont get a job, you will have to pay for your line training

On the job market, bear in mind that
* BA's 100 pilots are still in the hold pool since BA scaled down its LGW operation and delayed the intro of its A321 fleet. The whole thing is also now caught up in BALPA red tape over pensions.
* MyTravel is kicking out over 100 pilots and the rest could follow
* The RAF is retiring pilots faster under the new cost structure
* Easyjet is retiring its 737 fleet (ie downsizing versus previous expectations).
* Ryanair has its 737 order on hold
* Easyjet and Ryanair are recruiting foreign pilots faster than ever as they expand overseas bases
* the retirement rules will change against you in 18 months time

Its your call, but those saying "things will improve soon" may be looking through rose-tinted spectacles...

SD: "Pensions, job security, working conditions and the list goes on. At the first sign of a recession and everyone gets the boot". I'll worry about pensions and working conditions when I have a job, not before. Next recession not due for another 5+ years now we just avoided one. Indeed, it will be nice not to be bonded to any struggling airline offering poor conditions - I can leave after 8 months/500 hours.

"in a few months time the whole lot of will be moaning about rosters, overworking, fatigue, and crap pay and all the usual that goes on a night stop". Or we will be saying how glad we are to have made it to our dream job, and we were fatigued in our old job. And we never went in blind to start with.

"maybe in the third world you will find a job without a doubt". Yes, with nice weather, high quality of life (white sandy beaches etc), low tax rates, and low cost of living.

p.s. I would also be interested in any news from the Astraeus A320 scheme. I am guessing they use the BA sims at Cranebank with their own instructors?

p.p.s. Another UK airline may be about to start offering A320 type ratings - I'll keep you posted

500 hours - no not Iceman, but readily employable. Clearly you dont read anything about job vacancies for A320 pilots in the back of Flight every week. FACT.

Oh, and I do have a FO job on the A320 by the way, starting in a few weeks...

So how/when did you get to be a 757 FO anyway? For someone who says they are "ENJOYING" flying, most of your posts show you need to take some happy pills...

Dear Sir Donald,

You are right about the pension, and retirement...

I have 2 parents who are just retired and all the time they ask me to get a good job.
they do not make enough money with their retirement compensation and they want I help them.

But how can I help them when guys PAY TO WORK!
and who is going to pay my retirement when I will be 65 or 70???

I have invested time and money in these "useless"JAR licenses and as long as people pay for their type, someone is taking our money.
Not only the money for the type but the money we should have when we will be to old to work...

this whole system became totally unsocial and even "criminal".
I would like the CAA and the JAR starts to regularise some immoral procedures inside the CEE.

Sorry for my broken english, but I am sure you understand my frustration! and do not forget to read my post :"I will NOT pay a T/R"

Exclamation

I think you will find that - has been said by the Flight Ops Director - the very vast majority of people who have done an Astraeus type rating are now gainfully employed as a result.

Unpalatable as it may be for many, self sponsored type ratings do work for some people, and, of all the scheme going the one in question is one of the best.

Cheers

Self sponsored type ratings are a perfectly legitimate way of attempting to improve your employability. Like most, I would rather that the industry accepted that type ratings are an expense properly in their court, but I have to live in the world that exists! There is a whole world of difference between contracting with a training provider to obtain a qualification (with line time if you so wish) and offering your labour for free to an unscrupuulous operator who gives you nothing in return. The former is akin to obtaining any speculative professional qualification in any field; the latter is professional suicide.

I have no doubt that Hamrah's assertion that Astraeus/Bond's SSTR graduates have achieved a 95% employment rate is truthful and correct. Why? Because he must be held to account for what he says by his business and its shareholders; none of you hotheads (Skyman, Sir Donald) do. I have no doubt that, if he had time to do so (and if the Data Protection Act didn't exist), Hamrah could give you a list of the graduates' names and their current employers. All you lot do is attempt to shout louder.

Please try and employ some logic, sense and intelligence in your arguments. Incoherently ranting does you and your argument no good at all. Oh, and the world's not fair. Get over it.

I can back Hamrah up on what he says, people who are doing self sponsored type ratings are getting jobs, it’s a fact! I was on the March course with Astraeus with 14 other people, 3 people dropped out and the rest of us are now employed, me included. In my opinion the self sponsored type rating is really worth taking the risk!

I bet she would feel worse having to pay off loans for her ATPL with only 200 hours and no jet job.
