Assessment 18MAR

hi guys, went to the assessment last week, here's what I got:

for the interview, a lot of personal HR questions:
- tell me about yourself/your current job
- why did you chose the flight school you attended
- tell me about your instructors and how did you find yourself with them
- how much did you spend for your training and how did you pay for it
- which characteristics would you bring to Ryanair
- if you find yourself in the cockpit with an unfriendly captain, how would you cope with that

then a very short technical part:
- what is electricity
- why different cable widths/how does resistance vary with width
- voltage of the 737 electrical system
- what was the electrical system on the aircraft you flew for the MEP training (DA42) and how do you get AC from DC.

For the sim we were based in Liverpool with RWY 27 active, Wallasey departure and ILS for RWY 27.

Mate to be honest you didn't had the best questions from everything that is available out there. What answer did you gave them when they asked What is electricity ? Funny I am just so curious ...

Well done to u anyway !

I did reply shortly ad without elaborating too deeply, if they want you to explain further they will ask you to do so.
So I simply said that electricity is a physical phenomena involving a flow of electrons within a material, which current flow is used to power instruments and systems.

SIM :

- WAL2T DEP out of Liverpool (EGGP) runway 27
- General handling : climb/descent at 1000ft/min, turns, climbing/descending turns, no steep turns.
- ATC asked us on what QDM we were and then to intercept QDM 300° to the LPL NDB.
- Sim frozen, the assessor asked us on where we were and to point it on the chart (use the DME from the ILS and the QDR from the NDB)
- We entered the hold as instructed (parallel entry) then immediately after : galley fire.
- ILS rwy 27 full procedure

I had exactly the same scenario both as PM and PF.

INTERVIEW :

- What do you want to talk about ?
- Why do you want to join Ryanair ?
- Why do you want to be a captain ?
- Why not easyJet ? (I am living close to Geneva airport)
- What was the most difficult time in your training ?
- Pick 3 bases.

Then I talked to the same guy with whom I did the sim for the technical questions :

PERF :
- Are you very good at performances ? (This one was tricky)
- Why do we have take off segments ?
- Does a single engine aircraft have take off segments ?

AERO :
- What is Mach tuck ?

MTO :
- What is the cause of jetstreams ?
- At what height do we find jetstreams ?
- Where do you find lenticular clouds ?
- Are they a good sign or a bad sign ? Why ?

Then I had questions about Ryanair :
- What aircraft do we have ?
- How many ?
- Why did we ordered 737 MAX ?
- What are the differences between the B738 and the B737 MAX ?
- How many seats in our B738 ?
- How many cabin crews ?
- How many seats in the MAX ? (I answered 200)
- Exactly 200 ? (I said no, around 197)
- Do you know why ? (I answered : due to an emergency exit or a toilet and it seemed to be correct)
- When do we receive the 737 MAX ? (2019)

At the end of the interview, both of them were friendly and we cracked some jokes but they played the good cop / bad cop during the interview. Just relax, there's nothing horrible !

Starting the type rating in August.

Good luck guys !

Cheers

Great feedback here from everyone - thanks to all!

For anyone who applied recently through the CAE website and got the interview, did you fill out anything in the "Additional Info" section? I just put down a quick description of my personal profile and interest in Ryanair but not sure if it's better left blank.

And just to confirm, they get back to you later with a request for your CV, right? As far as I'm aware some time back it was a requirement to upload a CV right away during the CAE registration but to my surprise when I filled out the application at no point was a CV required!! That makes it a very level playing field...

Cheers!

I don't remember at any point in last three years an option to upload your cv. Maybe you are getting confused with the way Oxford/CAE cadets do or used to do.

A friend of mine who made it through the process about 3.5 years ago said it was a bit different and you uploaded your CV during registration. Maybe he forgot it also after 3.5 years... who knows.

At least it's good to hear I didn't miss anything. But I find it rather strange that they don't request a CV immediately because this way they must have thousands of applications which look almost identical. The playing field is very level - good for guys with minimum everything, not so good for those who have a bit more to show. That I found very surprising.

So I guess now it's just a waiting game.

it's 8 pilots per assessment, 4 days per week (monday to thursday).
This makes an approximate total of interviewed pilots around 1600/year.

8 pilots x £260 x 4 days p/w x approx 45 weeks per year = £375,000

priceless

Ryanair passrate

Hey guys, check this link:
Ryanair sheds light on recruitment process at ATO symposium | Pilot Career News

According to this, they have around 1000 pilots coming in for assessments per year with a 48% pass rate.

Please note that this was posted in June 2014. However, that's also when the recruitment started to bloom up. I doubt there's more assessments than 1200 pilots, making it 150 assessments in max 3 days per week.

Anyone going to Dublin 7th of April for an assessment?
