What About If You Can't Afford A Type Rating?

MY CONCERN IS THAT LIKE 4 OF MY FLIGHT TRAINING BUDDIES THAT FINISHED THEIR FLIGHT TRAINING WELL OVER BUDGET DUE TO THINGS LIKE WEATHER AND PRICES INCREASING, WILL WE EVER GET A JOB...
SOME OF THE GUYS I TRAINED WITH WHO HAD SOME CASH HAVE ALL GONE ON TO DO TYPE RATINGS AND I WISH THEM ALL THE LUCK POSSIBLE.....HOWEVER WHEN MYSELF AND MY RUNNING MATE IN TRAINING WERE TALKING ABOUT THIS IT APPEARS WE BOTH HAVE NO CASH AT OUR DISPOSAL....
SO DOES THAT MEAN WE TWO EARLY THIRTIES HOPEFULS MISS OUT OR IS THERE SOMEONE THAT WILL TAKE US ON....
THIS ENQUIRY IS FROM THE U.K

Hi
I thought about this very question last night.
Currently CPL/ME FI(R) and fortunately will be in a position to have paid all of my flying off this christmas. I instruct part time and therefore building some hours, however bored out of my brain in my full time job. On the one hand I was looking forward to having some money again, though on the other I know If I want to try and fulfil a dream I am going to have to make further sacrafices, so another 15K ish for the IR and hopefully MCC, but I dont think I could do this anymore to pay for a type rating, at the age of 30 I would also like to put a bit more investment into my personal life eg. keep the very long term girl friend happy, move into a bigger house etc.

So as above, is it really worth finishing of the ATPL when possibly an ATPL is no longer enough to land a job???

I need to make the dscision soon as my ATPL theory expires at the beginning of june. My current gut feeling is to do a NIKE (just do it)

All the best

mint

Can you afford an Flight Inst. rating, circa £5-6k...

You will build further experience, have better decision making, improved flying skills, probably learn to fly properly (!), have more to say at interview, will build P1 confidence, have more friends and CONTACTS plus your hours will steadily increase. Also, an entirely new aviation market will open with 700hours P1.

Planes are not going anywhere and nor is aviation! Everybody wants to travel and if you look at world aviation plans, its expansion at every corner.

Paid-for type ratings are knee jerk reactions from airlines and graduates to get pilots for the first recruitment drive since 2001. Think what happens when a dam bursts, it all goes mad for a while then it soon settles down.

For the established players, I think/hope that bonding schemes will take over where you pay back the rating via your monthly salary as they are slowly realising that not everybody has £20,000 in their back pocket.

However, there is absolutely no point rotting in an office. Stay within the flying game whatever you do.

Good luck,

Craggs

But someone thinks...

Hello gents...

Just got updated by someone out of the business that two or three folks graduated at the beginning of 2005 went for the TR. Guess what...dad's bottomless pockets gave a substantial hand! However good luck: someone call it a breakthrough, I call it job-shopping. I stick with my FI rating and go for those 700+ hrs. Meanwhile I hope few harp-branded-style flyers will get hungry of raw meat...

Blue skies

What About If You Can Afford A Type Rating?

What About If You Can Afford A Type Rating?

This is my situation:

Finished integrated pilot training 3 years ago. Have been working within the Aviation Industry since. At the same time I've actively been seeking F/O positions unfortunately without any positive result (read "lowtimer").

Right now I've been offered to join FI training (approx. 10 months) at a well established FTO but at the same time I'm thinking of buying a Type Rating (+Line Training). I can't really afford both (FI and Type Rating/Line Training) but I'm very eager to break through and start of my commercial pilot career as soon as possible.

Turning 30 next year...

Bite the bullet and buy a type WITH LINE HOURS!

Do the sums. Yes, initially it may cost more but you'll no doubt gain within the following couple of years.

Ryanair, Excel, Channex/Jet2 and lots of other airlines will take you with minimal line hours.

Hate to say it but if you got the cash go for type with hours, I have a weekend number flying which gives me average 10/15 hrs, recently I have been out-flying my instructor mates.
I work a real soul destroying job during the week but my cash is steadily increasing- and as soon as I have enough, if an airline has not bitten I will be very tempted to go for type+hrs.
My present job helps me decide emensly when I may have reservations about throwing more money at this route, if anything its a goal for me.
I come home and study my preferred type CBT in eager preparation.
I am just sorry- the argument that I am contirbuting to lower market conditions for pilots does not sway me when I hear of others landing nice shiney jets after SSTR or paid line time, I seem to live in a very miserable place called "unemployed commercial pilot land" and when been shouted at by complete arses all day I would pay anything to escape.
Yes If I wait I may get my call, but then again might not and as I must live this life its too much of a risk to take by waiting for me. I dont have ties and still have a couple of years till i hit thirty not that that matters, but I could work solid for a yr and a bit and finance type plus hrs, for me thats a glimmer of hope and all that keeps me happy amidst the plethora of PFO letters.
I am sure this route does not settle with alot of you guys but thats my pennies worth, I dont wish to contribute to a cancer of my preferred profession but the thought of becoming a statistic by far drives me in such directions.

I'm confused here, NC. Isn't "buying a TR with line hours" another term for "getting a job"?
What do you mean, exactly?
