DHL. Worth accepting the job offer?

I guess I could put this in Questions, but I think I will be more likely to get the answer here. HOGG/CARGO RAT2, sorry if that causes you problems.

Been offered a job at EMA as an F/O 757. I am type rated, with 1000 on type, but lowish hours overall.

I would appreciate a warts and all account of life in DHL, if anyone would care to enlighten me!

Save the bullsh?t about longhaul. I wanna know what life is like now, not what jam tastes like tomorrow please.

have spoken to quite a few DHL Air pilots around the routes and they all seem happy enough with the way things are going. It's too soon for an established roster pattern, l think, but they seem to be working similar patterns to ACL - 5/6 on, 3/4 off. At the moment they don't seem to be working too hard - 2, occasionally 3 sector nights.

Night freight: no slots, lots of shortish sectors, low hours. 4 sector nights with waiting around in between time are normal, although 2 & 3 sector nights also happen. Relaxed, no hassle. The flying is fun.
Days off are variable: often just two, after 5 nights work.
If you have low hours, it may take you some time to get what you need for command. With 3-4k hours, it could be very quick.
DHL Air prefer to promote from within, and that goes for training opportunities too. The night world is your oyster!

Standby from home, normally. Sometimes down route. ;)

A low time pilot such as yourself should be glad to have such an opportunity...

Did you apply to DHL or were you just offered this job out of the blue?

The reason I'm wondering is because if you applied and interviewed and were accepted, but now you're not sure if you want the job, you have in effect taken a slot someone else could've had.

I'm sure there is at least one pilot who missed out on the interview because your indesiesive self was there instead.

I am lucky, and I know it. However, please don't accuse me of taking other slots. DHL know what they want. Type rated guys at the minute is the order of the day! I have the right rating.

However, that does not mean I took anyone's slot.

They will look at all guys who meet their criteria. If you don't meet the criteria, you won't get looked at. Tough isn't it? That's life.

Such an endearing attitude one wonders about the personal characteristics of certain people flying today. May be the passenger market will not miss your charismatic qualities!!

I just got fired. Flew l/s but would probably take it anyhow (even F/O). Where do live ? Across the job supermarket ?

I got very lucky, that's all. I have been spoiled in my flying career quite honestly.

That is all there is to it.

For DHL, I have the right rating and enough hours to justify their employing me, so I guess I am lucky again.

Oh, by the way I have signed the contract and start very soon. Can't wait.

I think of myself to be lucky at the moment to be flying a nice new jet. You just seem to love rubbing peoples noses in it (ie those who aren't flying). With an attitude like yours I really do hope, with all the will in the world, that you get what you deserve - and soon !:p

I asked the question in good faith, then people get involved being bitter and twisted. If you can't ask for info on this forum, what is the point?

You seem to have some kind of personal grudge easondown. You always come out from under your stone when I say something. Do yourself a favour and back off, before you make more of a tit of yourself than you are doing already.

I have already stated how lucky I am to have got the offer from DHL. I already stated how lucky I was to get my break in the first place. Where does your problem lie?

Quite frankly, the fact that people are out of work is desperately disappointing for all of us. I am lucky to be in the right place at the right time.

That doesn't mean I should be criticised for my good fortune does it?? And it certainly doesn't mean i should not seek advice from experienced freight dogs. I don't think you are one of those, so kindly p?ss off as you really annoy me.

For F*%&ks sake give the guy a break, he asked a reasonable question before jumping ship. If he is coming from another operator then thats a job opening up for someone else. With 1000 hours on 757's its not as if he isn't qualified for the damn job.

Anyway, the DHL UK blokes I've met seem a good bunch of eggs it all depends if you like the permanent nights. It's not for everyone but some people love the Freightdog lifestyle.

Tailscrape gets my vote!
 

What is it with all you guys?

Tailscrape came on here to ask an honest question and just gets a load of sour grapes. It seems like people are falling over themselves to put the guy down just because he's got himself a job offer. What do you want him to do - donate it to charity?. And let's face it - you make your own luck, I'm sure he got the job because he was best qualified. I know DHL and used to work for them so I know that he is being modest in just putting it down to luck

If I was recruiting (and I have been in that position, before you ask), and from what I've read here, my vote would go to tailscrape. He's living in the real world not one where we all sit around and blow sunshine up each others' arses moaning about how the world owes us a living. His posts are reasonable in my view, and a fair defence against the posts attacking him.

I really cannot believe some of the pathetic and vindictive responses to Tailscrape's honest request for information about DHL before he accepts the job offer.

Certainly, I would be seeking information from the "horse's mouth" before I made a change in my career.

Now that I am getting towards the end of my flying career and am currently in a position to help hire good pilots, I hope that I do not have to interview too many pillocks such as xx, xx and xx

All three of you should be looking long and hard in the biggest mirror that you can find and should be asking yourself just how it was that Tailscrape got 1,000 hours on the 757 in the first place.

With regard to the base. as far as Im aware you need to be within 1 and a half hours from EMA, dont know if mode of transport is specified and standbys at home e.g. London are by prior arrangement.
