CL44 at BOH

Personally, against all odds, I keep a positive view, as long as the engines are not REMOVED, it still can be that the engines are heavy checked/prep. as well are the props.
If the props are still there, no sweat, If they turn up at SEN, there is a problem.
Remember, the plan was to ferry BOTH the Guppy and The Belfast to the USA.

All on my CL-44 website, www.swingtail.com, you can find a detailed summary of all events since its arrival at BOH and a detailed history on the machine itself.
I uploaded series of photo's of the Guppy on http://www.swingtail.com/guppy
for all to enjoy !
Additions and comments Welcome.

All the engines have now been removed so that's that then.

Without wishing to jeopardise Anglo-Aussie relations, can I ask, just what are the issues with regard to missing logbooks and equipment on the Guppy ? Various comments and cryptic clues have been posted here on PPRune, and there is obviously friction between members on each side of the globe.

Now that the Guppy’s future seems to be in public domain, maybe someone could enlighten us a little more ? :oh:

Is it practical to return components of the Guppy to the OEM and have them re-certified? Would that get around the issue of the missing log-books? If so, would it be cost effective to do this?

Heavy Cargo 3rd May 2008 01:04

News just at hand. HeavyLift just purchased OZ jet aircraft and certificate in Australia from European ? :D

Heavy Cargo 3rd May 2008 09:49

The Guppy was put up for sale yesterday for USD $25,000 without engines and props otherwise complete. Understand if not sold in 14 days it will be scrapped.

Contact Fax + 61 2 9232 4668 if you want to purchase and save it ? I guess this would be the last chance ?

What price the cockpit?

Hello Heavy Cargo,

What should the cockpit fetch?

Yes, I know, "the office at the front" will not be donated/sold to certain people/organisations... :}
Still, it is a piece of history!

Heavy Cargo 3rd May 2008 20:13

Just checked , they will donate the cockpit ( or entire aircraft ) or any components to a museum if one comes forward within 14 days.:D

Hi guys
First post here. Been watching this thread with sadness but as it looks like the end of the road for the Guppy has arrived, can I ask if it really is the RAF Millom A&MM that needs to be contact re saving anything?

Reason for asking is that there are a number of items which would be helpful to keep Bristol Britannia XM496 as Kemble alive. The Bristol Britannia XM496 Preservation Trust does not have a lot of money but if anything was going to be donated to a worthy cause then I know the team there would be grateful for those items common to both Britannia and CL-44.

Tks

dopey

CRANE AND LEACH attempting to re-use the CL44 engines on the Belfast.
Just goes to show their competency rate is still at zero.

another white elephant

OZ jet another dead horse joining the Heavyproblem fleet!!
Cant wait for the Karma to kick in....:ok:

fax number.

Only supplying fax number cause they are !!!! scared of their enemies...trust me there's thousands.
They were offered 480 grand and they now want to sell it for USD25 GRAND.....
Very sick individuals CRANE & LEACH.;)

ProplinerFan 5th May 2008 07:05

Remount and Sell..

480 !!! Really...in that case:
My advice to CRANE and LEACH: Bring back all Engines and Props, they will NOT fit the BELFAST (believe me, we tried in AFR long time ago, NO GO), remount the !!!! and sell the GUPPY fast for 100K to the group who previously was interested.

Engine compatability

[I]Surely-IF (and only if) Heavylift's intention IS to (somehow) fit the 44's engines to the Belfast, it would have already carried out a feasability study as to the likelihood of it succeeding?
Most opinion on this site however, seems to indicate that it just isn't possible-or at best-expensive! Can the 'experts' tell us just why it won't work!!!
One more point-given Heavylift's financial involvement-does it mean that the Belfast in Oz is making oodles of dosh for the airline and that it assesses ANOTHER Belfast would increase that? If so-let's see 'em BOTH in the air!
One other crazy idea ? Are there any other CL44's left in the world? If so, maybe Heavylift has plans in other directions!!!!!!!!
The scene at BOH resembles the UK TV Program Scrapheap Challenge right now-747s 1-11, CL44.
IF (again) the finances mentioned in previous threads are to be taken seriously then it makes this whole affair even more puzzling.]

GAZIN 5th May 2008 13:58

I hope the cockpit can be saved.
I am sure that the people responsible for the preserved Britannia's in the UK should be interested in the wings/tail-plane & undercarriages. Don't Duxford need a main u/c leg for G-AOVT?

mark g leach 6th May 2008 04:18

long story.

Its a sad state of affairs isnt it....the truth is being unearthed my friend.:)

koreafan 7th May 2008 01:50

Gazin
It was Cosford's Brit that needed a main u/c leg. One of them was cracked when she was swung round in high winds a few years ago.

However, even though Cosford had a loaner leg from G-ANCF on hand, when she was moved to her current position in order to make way for the building of the Cold War Exhibition, the use of the 'CF's leg was not required.

On 5th May, rrtyne asked;

One other crazy idea ? Are there any other CL44's left in the world? If so, maybe Heavylift has plans in other directions!!!!!!!!
http://www.cl44.com/cl44/Survivors.htm indicates that there are four surviving airframes including the Guppy. These are s/nos 13, 16 (the Guppy), 23 and 37. None of them look to be in good shape. Other than the Guppy, 37 was probably the last of these to fly but was damaged in a landing accident. 13 was being considered for return to Canada for restoration and preservation, but I believe that this idea was abandoned for cost reasons. 23 is too far gone by the look of it.

If you look through the individual a/c histories at http://www.cl44.com/cl44/prodlist/serial01.htm, there are three more airframes whose status isn't w/o or scrapped. These are s/nos 19, 25 and 32. Of these, 32 was probably destroyed in the US attacks on Lybia many years ago. S/no 25 was w/o in 2002; http://aviation-safety.net/database/...?id=20020217-0. I'm not sure of the status of s/no 19. Scrapped?

Porrohman 22nd May 2008 13:28

If you look at the following aerial photo, it would appear that the CL44 is no longer at the site of the old Jakarta Airport;
http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&hl...14291&t=k&z=17

The equivalent aerial photo on http://www.multimap.com/maps/?v=2&FORM=LMLTCC&cp=-6.151702%7e106.846139&style=h&lvl=17&tilt=-90&dir=0&alt=-1000&phx=0&phy=0&phscl=1&where1=Jakarta&encType=1&referer=li ve#map=-6.15172,106.8461|18|32&dp=860&loc=ID:-6.17444:106.82944:17|Jakarta|Jakarta, Jakarta Raya, Indonesia shows 2 aircraft at the south side of the semi-circular lake (the lake on the left in the Google photo) one of which looks like a CL44 (presumably s/no 19).

As you'll see from these aerial photos, the old Jakara airrport has now been completely redeveloped and there's little trace of it now.
