49 Cattle perish enroute Australia to Kazakhstan
 

What actually happened guys?
Australian media reports are very vague on the technical aspects as usual.
They report suffocation.
Was there a depressurisation , pack problem or just poor ventilation.
I believe aircraft was a 747 which tech stopped in Sinapore, but cattle were found dead on landing in Almarty.
My rural friends are keen for this market to succeed but not with these risks!

Any cattle charter/flight that I have done has has carried groom/handlers from the customer.

So the shipper should know the answer to this from his rep on the flight, if your rural friends are concerned with future shipments.........

This snafu is being probably being played out in the insurance courts.
However the exporter had purchased the cattle from the producers so the infomation is not willingly passed back down the line.

Expenses aside though I would have thought shipment by air to be far safer for the liverstock than by sea?

And far less smelly too. We used to pass the cattle ships sailing from Aussie to the Gulf on our way to the gulf and you could smell them miles off :yuk:

In the past I have done several trips hauling Cattle on the 747 and the L-1011. It was our understanding that temperature and plenty of ventilation is critical for survival. I was told that the new procedure was to pack them very tightly in the pen so they Cannot Lay Down. This was to prevent the other cattle from laying on top of them thus Smothering them to death. If the outside temperature at the departure airport was extremely high and the A/C systems on the Aircraft were not working properly this would and could cause death even before departure. Deer and Pigs are also quite sensitive.
