AAWH GETS $171 Million Defense Contract

By Rich Smith
August 30, 2013

The U.S. Department of Defense announced no fewer than 35 separate contract awards, worth a combined $1.78 billion Friday.

A very significant portion of these funds, however, about 32%, was not spent on military hardware at all -- but on shipping costs.

Specifically, the U.S. Transportation Command awarded three contracts Friday, worth $171 million each, to hire FedEx (NYSE: FDX ) , UPS (NYSE: UPS ) , and Atlas Air Worldwide's (NASDAQ: AAWW ) Polar Air Cargo subsidiary to perform a second option year (out of four possible) on their respective indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity fixed-price contracts to perform Worldwide Express 5 (WWX-5) small package delivery services for the military.

All three of these contracts will now run through Sept. 30, 2014.

Incidentally, FedEx won a second defense contract for itself Friday, this being a $49.8 million option-year exercise hiring FedEx to perform "overpacking" and transportation of perishable substances for the Defense Commissary Agency and Defense Logistics Agency.

This contract, which specifically concerns the delivery of "primarily fresh fruits and vegetables," continues FedEx's contract to deliver such produce from the U.S. West Coast to Defense Department locations in Japan, Korea, Guam, and Alaska.

Unless extended further, it will run from Oct. 1, 2013 through Sept. 30, 2014.

That contract is a normal, every year event. Think of it as putting money on account for the AMC flying Atlas and other carriers perform. In fact, if Atlas were to get 777s, I'd think AMC is the last place you'd see them. AMC likes Whales and the redundancy they provide.

Fr8Dog,

This is a rumor network, and that sure fits the bill. Time will tell

Where are all the pilots gonna come from?

3pointlanding 3rd Sep 2013 15:56

Sure they are! And just where do you think they are coming from? Beoing's orders are full for a long time and there are no conversion programs up and running. By the time they get around to you the DoD contracts will be over.

You'll notice your picture is 2005.

Fr8Dog,

I just read a similar post on another board that copied your original post. The Atlas guys who responded exposed you as a troll. No way Atlas could get 777Fs ready for that contract. Not saying Atlas couldn't eventually get 777Fs - just not in your fictional timeframe.

Why do it? Quit wasting our time with LIES.

777`s for the DOD is probably BS. 777`s in a CMI arrangement for existing 777 order holders or operators is within the realm of possibilities.;)

I guess the LOA for the 777's released yesterday afternoon by the Union means nothing right?

Perhaps Fr8Dog suffers from King Baby Syndrome? (King Baby Syndrome? - Ask.com)
Only reasonable explanation since he's posted the same thing on numerous forums. Hopefully, he'll get the help he needs.

Having operated for 3 DOD contractors with DC-10/ MD-11, they love redundancy (747 being the fave) and accepted the tri motor craft. I would think the red tape in accepting a twin is very thick and not a selling point. They do not care how much fuel you burn.

I know about 300+ guys that would love to come work with you guys. We have had all the fun we want in the sandpit and would welcome the chance to come home. I will keep my fingers crossed! Thanks for the info.:ok:

CAO 16th Sep 2013 03:06

Redundancy of 4 (or even 3) is nice, but then why does the DOD let us (Atlas, Omni, North American, Miami Air, etc) fly their troops in everything from 737s to 777s?

I, however, don't see the DOD going for that many 777s for bringing troops, and materiel, back to the States...I do however see other customers eying Atlas operating 777s (most likely DHL, and there are rumors about others as well).
