Any help on shipping?
 

Not sure if anyone here can help or not but I have a need to get a helicopter canopy (windscreen) from England to the US. It's just a bit too big for the biggest oversize baggage requirement with the airlines so I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas or connections that could help get it back to the US without costing an arm, a leg and a flock of sheep?

Dimensions & weight including packaging (which is your responsibility)...

If its any help, an entire S76, fits into a 747F, as does a Super Puma so the windshield is not an issue.

Approximate dimensions are 4ft wide x 5ft long x 4 ft high. Weight would depend on how heavily the crate would need to be to protect it. Best guess is 150lbs max.

Shipping from London (any other options in England?) to preferably Seattle but really anywhere in the US could be accomodated. Just need to get it across the pond.

Get a pro packing company to "pack it". Money well spent.

Your package weight and dims are not an issue. Honestly, its small stuff. Belly freight on anything going LHR (or Europe)-SEA..

Thanks for the info. Any suggestions on who to contact? I've tried a few freight forwarders but the prices seem pretty excessive.

Fling wing, with the type of cargo you are shipping, you are going to
be charged for the volume weight the item takes up. You can try
any of the big forwarders even the medium ones, but because of the
volume, you will have a pretty steep charge. They may vary a little
bit, but use the one that provides you the service you need the
most. They are all pretty much the same on service levels.

I would go with the pro's, try TNT International.
I have used them in the past and never had a problem.

One more question. The canopy is down south, close to the coast in Devonshire. Anyone have any good creative ideas on how I could arrange a delivery up to London aside from the usual shipping (i.e. anyone with a personal truck or lorry who commutes up that way?)

If I sound cheap it's true as I'm trying to keep the total cost under what it would cost me to just buy one from the factory here in the US.

I would suggest that u make ctc with a national frt forwarder that have offices all round the country perhaps Burlington air express or danzas aei,
that way you can instruct the company to collect from any uk premises, most big forwarders have their main depot around the LHR area, then the local branch will do the donkey work and then they will truck up to lhr at night, depending on where in the states u want to send the cnmt most forwarders offer a cargo consolidation service which will work out cheaper then going dircet to a major carrier as the forwarder will buy in bulk tonnage which enables the shipper to achive a better rate per kilo, it would normally travel within a 5 day period from door to door depending on the urgent nature of the cnmt, but yes u will have to pay on the volume which is the space it takes up and not the gross weight, most freight fwds will do a charges collect service which wud mean that you could pay for the cnmt on arrvl in the us. if u get stuck pm me x rgds

I would imagine you would need to build a skeleton crate if you can't find a box that will fit this windscreen. Unfortunately this shipment will volume by quite a bit.

In addition to booking the flight and delivering the freight to the ramp, you'll also need to clear customs in the US. That means you need to create a commercial invoice and packing list.

I would enlist in the services of a forwarder. Give Schenker at LHR a call. 208 890-8899 and ask to speak with someone in air export.
