L1011 Freighter
 
An old collegue is in search of a decent airworthy L-1011 freighter ( with cargo door and reforced floor) to fly from South-America to Africa and Europe.

Anyone aware of one for sale somewhere ?

Please no Mickey Mouse L-1011 (pax a/c without seats, acting as freighter)

decent airworthy L-1011 freighter
ha ha ha.

They were falling apart 7 years ago when i flew them so god knows what they are like now.

2003 Hoppy but agree with you they were in very poor shape then and I would doubt if the owners have done anything but the minimums to keep them seemingly airworthy. They could become good freightors but will need a vast amount of money thrown at them.

Fergie & Hoppy, are referring to the Lanta aircraft.:hmm:

There are 2 others available that are in fairly good condition.

They will of course need a heavy check and avionic updates which is the same for any older aircraft previously on US reg but still a good deal if you have the work:}

yes a good deal.
Only problem where will you get the crews.
Not many current now, unless you some how get into the sim in Atlanta Ga, no way for recurent sim checks.
Sim in the UK last I hear is out of service do to a fire last November, no plans to bring it back.
So after May 2008 unless you get a sim check in ATL, no one is current, provided you did this in the UK in November.
There is also no qualified/approved L-1011 ground school available anywhere.
Checks would have to be done on the aircraft, which means no pax, no cargo, very expensive.
Think everyone knows this, any one trying to go around this may be in for some trouble.
Airplanes are there, crews are not, as least legal ones anyway!
Last ferry I did with a N registered aircraft, just a few months ago, current sim checks and license had to be provided to the FAA and all crew had to do a 10 year background check with TSA.
This took over 3 weeks to get accomplished.
This was for a N registered aircraft that was to be operated for a foreign airline out of Jordan.

Sim readily available in ATL, at $500/hr in blocks of 4 hours.
Generally, TSA clearance for foreign (non-US) crews is not a particular problem, if handled properly and timely.

PC's in the airplane?
Yes, this is being considered by a couple of small airlines, and of course, is approved by the relevant regulatory authority.

We had L-1011 freighters at Kalitta/AIA/Kitty Hawk/ whatever lol. They were parked in the desert last time I heard however who knows what happened to them since then. If you really want one call Connie Kalitta and I'm sure he will tell you where to go.:}

CR2 would currently fail CRM exams & is not in the mood.

Not much CRM in the Tristar world left anyway.
Look at the Phuket air 747 thread recently?
Really way out of line and about as offensive as you can get!
Yet the moderators let this go.
Anyway thanks for putting up with all of us old grumpy Tristar crews.
And the maint people that add there very important information.
Maybe the title should be different but all important things are posted here.
Many Tristar aircraft are available, crew may be a problem unless something changes soon.
The Skyeyes freighter is available for wet lease if this helps, but better watch out for the BKK corruption.

There aren't any TriStars worth a candle out there these days. Only ones worth flying are the RAF -500's.

There are at least 2 freighters available now that are not affiliated with the Belgian. PM me for details so I do not advertise!

One is nearly ready to go, and a second & third are a few months away!

A fourth is sitting in MIA being repaired.

If there is no interest why are so many outfits overhauling the Landing Gear including the RAF.

As sad as it may sound think WildRover sums it up best. Anybody who still wants to consider operating an L1011 has stones in their head.

With the final demise of the L1011's though and the DC-10's also now coming near to the end of their life, there is a huge vacume developing for midsized cargo jets with any half decent range. DC8's and B707's are also virtualy dead.

In my humble opinion smaller secondary operators can just not afford the time to wait to recapitilise their investment with a B767. So what's the alternatives?

Well I believe that ATA are trying to replace their L1011's with the DC10's and guess what they are hanging on to them for now because the DC10's are all problems!
