SAT SJM, any one out there

Hi guys,

Following on from the thread about some one looking for a L100 prompted me to find out just who is looking in on PPRuNe that is ex SAT.

C130, DC8 or 747 crews, Brit engineers that kept it all going, load masters, serial killers who liked guns and knives, office and support staff back in the colonies etc.

Who is out there looking in? I was part of the gang from 1994 until end 1998.

My last Herc trip was to Turkey in 1998, my last DC8 adventure ended when the final one blasted off from DHL Brussels mid April 1998 back to the USA to be handed back. I did the kick out with Phil Kendal.

So come on guys, own up; tell all about your time with the best Herc operator ever.:ok:

I flew the Herk for SAT from 1987-1990. Flew a lot of Africa in Ethiopia, Sudan, Uganda and Kenya. Missed out on the Lokichogio Bass Rodeo as I went to work for FedEx about the time it was cranking up. Also flew a lot of the MAC flying to the Caribbean, Central America, Thule AB, etc. It was such a great group. The British mechs really took care of us over in Africa. Those guys did know how to throw a party.
Since I left SAT life has been very good. A regular flying schedule, great pay and benifits. Nowhere near as exciting, however. And you can't beat the Herk. Greatest airplane ever built.:ok:

Loadmaster and Project Manager for ten years from 1988 to 1998.

Many years in Africa - Sudan, Kenya, Angola, Zimbabwe, Seth Efrika, Somalia. Couple o' years in Singapore and tons in Europe.

Best ten years of my life (which I managed to escape with on more than one occasion!) :ok:

1994 to the end (Sept '98). Hercs then 74. Crappy wages, dose of Malaria and 12 years of stories. Loved every minute! Still a load of ex SAT at Atlas.

Worked with TAA and SAT,ABC, Transafrik from 1984 to 1988,Angola,Ethiopia,
and other exotic locations.
A rare pleasure to work with many mad dogs,
Too many tales to recall, would probably bring
down a few politicians!:8
My Liver will never be the same again.

Herk 13th Mar 2006 13:39

I was there from 1986-1998; Herk, -8, 747. Quite a series of adventures, with an impressive cast of characters.

Someone should write a book.

It would be a best seller. A comedy of errors. How to get lost over Bosnia, is this the way to the Florida 2000, do I get danger money for this and a lot of other well known SAT howlers. It certainly would be.

CargoMatatu, does your first name begin with a R by chance:ok:

Nope:hmm: Try "J". (Thinks: "Cool. Excellent. A guessing game:ok: ")

Does the J form the start of an old British name for German people and a container, can, for carrying fuel?
Great fun this.:ok:

taffman 14th Mar 2006 05:45

Are you living in a country whose name is a large sea mammal and is the largest on this planet?:hmm: Thinking.

CargoMatatu 14th Mar 2006 07:37

Nope, nope and nope! Not even close!

Am a Brit, living in a country not too far distant from you - "The Green Heart of Europe". Up the road and right a bit!

Try again.

taffman 14th Mar 2006 07:46

The countries which border france which are up and to the right are, Luxembourg, Belgium and Germany which is a may be. As for the ‘green heart of Europe, odd description. Where does this come from?:hmm:

CargoMatatu 14th Mar 2006 08:04

Okay. I can see you're not going to get this one, but you were getting warmer!

Luxembourg always used to call itself the Green Heart of Europe, coz before the expansion of the EU it was geographically right at the heart of Europe and it is well forested.

Although, I didn't live here when I was working for SAT. I lived in Lincolnshire in the U of K!

Cargolux:ok:

CargoMatatu 14th Mar 2006 08:18

Nice try but, no! Sorry!

Six years here with Atlas Air, then nearly two with AirBridge Cargo.

Currently waiting for the golf season to reopen whilst spending my time as a "government statistic"!

taffman 14th Mar 2006 08:47

Checked and replied. :ok:

Gwatts 15th Mar 2006 01:29

SAT from 1990 through 1997, Herc and the 8. One of the "New Guinea Pigs", spent way too much time in Angola. These were some of the best years of my career.
