Living in Luxembourg
 

Hi,

Some of you in the know..The standard of living in Luxembourg is known to be good(Expensive). Therefore what do you have to pay for a three bedroom apartment in a desent area and are the apartments hard to get ?

Living in Luxembourg is of a high standard but it is not expensive, depending on what you are comparing it to of course.

40% of the country's population are foreigners, many of which are renting thus accommodation is easily available. The biggest problem with Luxembourg is the bullsh1t, you might have to sign a 1, 2, or 3 year agreement on a property, deposit 3 months rent and all this is governed by the law of the land and, in most cases, is not negotiable. I survived 3+ years there though.

There are many standards of accommodation available, in the top notch areas or the not so top notch. If you don't mind a 30 minute drive to work you can also choose to live in Germany, Belgium or France!

To ask the price of a 3 bedroomed apartment is like asking how long is a piece of string!

Good place to look, especially if you're renting.
As was said above though, if you don't mind driving ~30mins, you might prefer living in Germany or France.

Definitely cheaper!

As others have said, try Germany, Belgium or France for cheaper accom. All well connected to Findel by motorway, and if these get busy during rush hour, well, that's "busy" by LUX standards. And do remember to fill up this side of the border :ok:

Since the A13 Motorway has opened, the Moselle valley is definitely worth a look. On the German side, EUR 1500/month will take you WAY further than a 3 bedroomed flat in the Moselle valley (come to think about it, even EUR 1000 probably will ). Trier is more expensive, but still much less so than LUX itself. And then there's France - very nice for families as the French tax system works in their favour.
Oh, and Arlon (Belgium) is a dump IMHO. Don't even think about it. Even Longwy (in France) is nicer.

If you must be in Luxembourg. take something not in the center. but if you have the choice go in treves(Germany) thionville(france) or Arlon(bel) it's cheaper.

Best place would be Trier. Much cheaper and lovely place. Lux is grand, but expensive against all out lying areas. and no offence, but metz is horrible, as well as thionville and longwy, unless you like being invaded by family cars filling with monthly shopping!.


For a 3 bedroomed house in lux, looking at 1500 or so.
For a 3 bedroomed apartment in Lux centre, looking at 2000

There's always the compromise of living outside the city, but still in the borders.

Rents drop considerably if you are willing to live outside the city center, but still near to the airport.

Travel into the city can be achieved in around 15 minutes (from my place!).

Beer prices outside the city center are considerably cheaper too!:ok: :D

By law, the max duration of a contract is now 1 year. If you know someone, try reading the newspapers, like the Luxembourger Wort. Maybe you can get something private; saves a lot of bucks.
If you decide to stay inside the country, drive around and look what area you still like.
The South/South-east is cheaper, but not as "classy" as downtown Lux.

Next to it, consider if you'll have a car at your disposal. If you'll be dependant on public transportation, you're terribly limited!

Holding Short:

There is a website for people moving to a few countries in northwestern Europe, i.e. Belgium, Netherlands, Germany...
and I don't remember where I discovered it, or if it is even up to date. People advertise for roommates, or how to find apartments in various cities. I wish that my wife and I had used it for a vacation or two.
