IL 76 Replacement
Just thinking,
These machines are approaching the end of their lifespan as far as EU airports etc. are concerned. What will replace them? They are relatively cheap to charter, "flexible" in their load capacity and their crews are very "obliging" etc. etc. |
There is nothing that is suitable to replace an IL76, closest Western equivalent being Boeing C17.
The only way in which the IL76 will have a future in the western world is re-engining and more uptodate airframes. Volga Dnepr are currently adding two "new" airframes to their fleet including being fitted with new Stage 4 turbofan engines. The IL76 is a highly versatile, flexible and durable aircraft, tough as old boots. Just need to be less smoky, noisy and shake off the old/aged/poorly maintained reputation it has got itself. |
The IL76 is an excellent cargo aircraft. It's unique in cargo capacity & loadability. Like Bristolre says the only alternative is the Boeing C-17, but this will not be available for commercial cargo operations, if at all, for many years to come.
To re-engine an IL76 is estimated at US$ 6-8 million, more than it is worth for most IL76 operators. |
Great aircraft to fly on!!

Apparently, there are moves to upgrade.
A 6M stretched fuselage with P&W technology engines and a possible glass cockpit. Unfortunately, cost issues will prevent the re-proliferation amongst the many low cost freight carriers. |
IL76TF
The replacement for the standard IL76 is the new IL76TF.
The IL-76TF, built at Tashkent, is designed to carry 52 tons of payload in containers and on pallets up to 5000 km. The length of IL-76TF cargo hold is extended by 6.6 m in comparison with the basic version. The plane is powered by 4 new high-by-pass ratio CFM56-5C4 turbofans rated at 15,4 tons of thrust each supplied by CFM International Consortium. The main advantages of IL-76TF compared with IL-76TD are: cargo hold capacity is increased by 1.3-1.5 times; fuel efficiency is raised by 12 %; noise and emission are reduced in accordance with ICAO standards.
