DHL Questions ..... please
 

Seen a few posts about DHL and the current roster pattern of 8 on 6 off etc.

Seriously interested as I want a quality of life that I do believe is being eroded with a lot of flying jobs. Don't mind working my butt off when away but its the block time off that makes my day!!

So can those working confirm the deal, routes, nigght stops, average hours and pattern + Capt's salary and allowances.

The 8/6 roster is still not in place,we hope we will get it next year I dont think we hire Captains anymore,lots of F/O waiting for an upgrade.

Quality of life you get from a flying job is often a matter of personal circumstances. There are a great number of people who like to fly a few short sectors and go home each night. Life on night freight is a bit like long haul, going 'down route' for a few days, which is my personal choice. Six days off sounds OK but after 8 days round the route each night, forget the first 48hrs as being anything useful. An 8/6 roster seems to work OK with EAT and worked on the ACL A300 fleet. The idea of week on/week off has been proposed at EMA since the days of Air Bridge, HCL and ACL - but it never actually happens because FTLs remain commercial targets.

DHL Air UK. I believe we have around 180 odd pilots at the minute flying our frames. Around 55%/45% split between pilots employed directly by DHL, and the rest on a loan deal of sorts from another close company in the network, namely AIR CONTRACTORS.

DHL have 50 or so Captains of their own, and around 45 of their own FO's. The corresponding shortfall is made up of ACL Captains and FO's.

It may be true that the ACL FO's will not be promoted whilst on this deal, but as we all know things do change.

DHL promote from within, so direct Commands may be a thing of the past. If you joined now at the BOTTOM of the FO seniority list I would guess on 5 years to command. That could be a lot longer if no one leaves and the ACL FO's get a shot at command.

8 and 6 will suit some, not others. Period.

The management are very good and generally very approachable. The training is good too.

The crews are friendly and we all get on. It can be a really good laugh too at times.

As for money, well DHL have just employed 10 low time guys on about £28000, rising to £41000 over 5 years.

A non type rated FO starts on around £36000 for first year, before jumping to £41000.

We have annual payrises and increments.

A year one Captain is on around £63000 plus allowances.

Allowances for both seats are £2.30 for EVERY hour on duty. That works out at about £6000 a year extra.

There are I am sure better jobs out there. However, there are worse too.

The rest of the package is just about the industry norm.

I am looking to find out if the A-300 that are flying at DHL are any of the old A300's we had at Carnival. I anyone has some info on old registration numbers I would be greatful Thanks

I know of 2 operating for EAT at present, MSN's 095 & 274 N226KW & N227KW. Hope this is of help.

Where do the A300s fly to, and what about the 757s? When you are hired there, what position do you take first? FE on the A300? How long before an FO seat on the 757? Where is the main crew base?

All the F/E are PFE so no pilots there.
The A300s and some B757s are at EAT in Belgium and the rest of the B757s fly for DHL Air in the UK
Dont know for the Hiring at EAT but at DHL Air we only hire F/O who start on the 757(not much choice)
when the airline started up they also hires direct entry captains but they only upgrade from within now.

Thank you for responding. Where is the UK base--EDI? Also, what is "EAT"? Are the trips any good on the 757s? Where are some of the layovers?? Do guys like the A300 better than the 757? Thanks again!

DHL Air is based in EMA , EAT is European Air Transport ,the airline set up in Belgium by DHL when they first started in Europe.
The 757 trips are OK ,all inside Europe for DHL Air
Common stops are CGN,BRU,GOT,OPO,FRA,HAM,VIT,VLC,DUB,ORK,EDI,SNN etc.
Dont know what type people like better ,we only have the 757.

Is DHL UK thinking of hiring F/Os in te near future?
What are the minimum requirements?
Are 1000 hours of turboprop enough?
Do you know, if they don´t hire from other DHL subcontractors?

I know of a couple of F/O who are leaving and of some who are thinking about it(silly people:p ), so they might start hiring again!!
They hire of the steet ,not from subcontractors(we dont really have that many).
they have hired people with 250hr in the past so i would thing 1000hr turboprop would do(but i dont do the hiring)

I have applied to DHL UK in September..I have 2400 hours of turboprop including 1400 as PIC.
They never sent me any reply..maybe too many applying and a lack of human resources personel to answer??

Just heard, on good authority, that DHL Air could well be looking for B757 rated FOs following internal promotions. May be worth a call if you're interested?

Just a quick question from a relative newbie - what kind of duty hours do DHL pilots work (ie. flight times)? Looking at the info here so far, working for them seems to be a pretty good deal.

Duty hours : a lot
Flying hours: i did 250hr last year
