DHL/EAT transatlantic fleet change

What's this rumour about DHL/EAT teaming up with Deutsche Post and getting rid of World Airways' MD-11s and its own DC-8s next year ???

Any truth there ?

 :hmm:

Teaming up you say? Well, the merry yellow brigade of DP has bought all of DHL, including DHL Air and EAT. Hardly teaming up in my book, more like an outright purchase of the companies. Never mind. Rumours has been posted on this forum saying that DHL Air has bought 3 767F for transatlantic ops. Nothing official has been sent out. Someone from Air might be able to elaborate further. Then again, it could be a case of "crewroom wishful thinking" ....

However, it is not far from the truth to say that DHL is as unimpressed by LH Cargo, as LHC allegedly are by DHL.

Speaking of the 767F. I've heard rumours that the fuselage is too narrow to accept side by side loading of 125/88 ULDs. Any truth to that?

you are right the Bo.767 will only take 1 pallet 125/88 and the other has to be a size that fits nothing else
the hold is about 1.75 the width of the A300/D.C.10/M.D.11

Thanks. That does make the 767 purchase look more like pilot wishful thinking than anything else. Then again, I could be wrong. Would hardly be the first time ....

The bean counters probably fell off their desks when they realised they could save money on training, thanks to 757/767 cockpit commonality and similar type ratings.

Anyway, where does the 767 stand regarding capacity, compared to DC-8 and MD11 ? Right in the middle or closer to MD11 ? Wouldn't the MD11 be "too big" on the transatlantic market ?

Lots of questions...

:hmm:

By this time next year the LH MD11F will be gone from DHL service. 4 MD11s will be operating CGN-EMA-JFK-CVG. EMA-LAX and one other route yetto be decided. These aircraft will be operated by either DhlAir or Air Contractors Crews or a mix as it is now. Maybe sooner? Whoknos .

cphflyer,

My gossip is in direct opposition to yours. It looks likely that LH will take over all DHL longhaul with the MD11 within a Join Venture. It's been on/off/on/off for a while but is now planned for Summer 04. Guess we'll just have to wait & see.

Sorry to advise you that you were a bit wrong re. loading of the 767. I've seen a manual published by Boeing, and the 767-300PF can indeed hold ULDs in twin-row, 24 125/88 in total on the upperdeck. The -200PF can hold 21. If DHL are buying anything, it will be the SF, a converted pax aircraft. I have not seen any manuals on that version.

This makes the -300PF fit in between a DC-8 (18 positions) and a MD-11 (26 positions).

Might be some truth to the rumours, but still nothing official.
