DHL to buy 6 B767-300ER's

Sorry for the double post all. Any word on who is going to fly these birds? My guess is either EAT or DHL UK.

Any of you European folks hear anything?

Thats what im thinking but why is DHL ordering aircraft for another company?
Did ABX loose the phone number of Boeings sales department?

DHL, DHL UK, EAT, Swiftair, ABX, Astar,... the money only goes to 1 wallet, so it doesn't matter who buys the planes. If you look at the ident tags on our planes, it is a paper full of "leased to...,subcontracted to...,sub-subcontracted to, owned by,...".
From EAT side, I've not heard of any new 767's coming in, so I'm almost sure they are not for EAT and DHL UK. What I did hear is that we get 2 "new" Airbus A300B4's (OO-DID and OO-DIE). That last one is very applicable to EAT Belgium.

EAT and DHLair are owned my DHL Swiftair is part owned i think and ABX and Astar operate for DHL but are not owned! ABX already has some 767's so a bit wierd that DHL is now buying some for them.
But i do agree that i dont see them come to Europe ,we can only fly them to the States and back ,but under the new agreement between the EU and US a US company could fly them over to the EU and fly them around here for a bit (like UPS)

Saw a corporate statement issued by John Mullen, the DHL Express CFO in the US. It'll be brand new -300ER Freighters, to my knowledge the first time DHL has went and bought shiny new metal. Well, apart from the A300-600Fs flying with AHK, but we only own 40% of those.
Stands to reason then, that they'll be N-reg'd; but whether it'll be ABX or ASTAR is not revealed at this point in time. Not the best of news for our guys with EAT and DHK who might have hoped for some longhaul flying. There was no information about routes, but little voices have spoken about them being used for point-to-point routes across the pond. That, however, is rumours taken to the extreme!

And I've heard those 747s will an expansion of the current JV with LCAG. That is also the only thing I've heard (that's suitable for publication on a rumours network).

Thanks for the replies all! Flop, I'd agree that most likely they would be used on point to point oceanic. The only thing that has me scratching my head, is the tech. specs. from Boeing. Look at this range of action graph, and see what ya'll think. It sounds marginal to me operating to/from JFK with a max. payload of 127k.

Would surprise me if the 767s were to be for one of the US operators. Might call into question the independence of those airlines. As Neil said did ABX lose their chequebook?

On a general note, do I understand it correctly that US freight operators can fly to, and around, the EU, but EU freight operators can only fly to the US there and back?

If this is correct it's obviously a tad unfair, is it not.

RAFAT,

Not exactly. UPS has their inter-european fleet subbed out to an EU carrier, (the name of which escapes me at the moment) however, FedEx has a base in France, but I don't know if they fly inter-europe or not. I know when I was doing inter-european charters on the 8 years ago, we used the EuroTran call sign, flying sub-contract for EAT. On the other hand, we also used to do JFK-EMA-BRU-JFK, and CVG-BBR-BAH-BBR-JFK on a regular basis on our own route authority, prior to the segment becoming to large for an 8 to carry, then it went to Gemini, then DLH. (The BAH route segment went to Kalitta.)

Fedex planes fly inter european routes but not unlimited. They use Air contractors (1 A300 and several ATRs), Westair (ATR-ATP) and Swiftair (ATR and EMB120).
UPS uses mainly STAR air (B767) , MNG cargo (A300), Bluebird cargo (B737) and Farnair (ATRs and F27) to fly within Europe.
DHL uses EAT (A300 and 757),DHL UK (757) in Europe.

Just to jump into the frey, DHL has told Atlas/Polar that their plan is to have all Trans-Ocean shipments be done by them. Atlas World Wide Holdings has expressed interest in doing a smaller plane if they could get some sharing of the risk, ie partial ownership?

DHL Orders 767s for U.S. Market
Air Cargo World, Friday March 09, 2007

"Express delivery company DHL confirmed an order for six 767-300ER (Extended Range) Freighters from Boeing to be used in its U.S. operations. "Adding the wide-body 767 Freighter to our network allows us to grow our business considerably," said John Mullen, CEO DHL Express. "This acquisition will support the DHL Express strategy with particular emphasis on renewing and updating the network supporting operations that serve the U.S. market."

As the third largest express operator in the U.S. market, DHL said it is striving to expand its overall leadership in the global express business. "DHL's high-volume express operations require a freighter that has proven capabilities in terms of utilization and schedule reliability. The 767 Freighter has exactly those attributes," said Marlin Dailey, vice president Sales for Europe, Russia and Central Asia, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. The order is valued at $894 million at list prices. The fuel efficient Boeing 767 Freighter has low noise levels which meet or exceed international Chapter 3 noise requirements"

Joe Hete would never buy a new aircraft! It makes more sense for ABX to fly these than ASTAR we could do it a lot cheaper. Mostly because of our crappy ACMI agreement. And the fact that we are allready flying the type.

I doubt if these 767s are going to European operators. ABX already does have about 50 of them, Astar doesn't have any but both carriers move freight more or less only in DHL's domestic US market. My bet is on using Atlas to fly them internationally under the Polar certificate. Whales are getting expensive to run.

I am telling you ABX all the way! Our standards guys have been working on ETOPS for a couple of years and we are allready flying quite a bit of international charter, mostly to South America. Of course only time will tell.

True that only time will tell, Kougarok. Although, there is the small matter of ABX getting Appendix A approval. I'm leaning more towards EAT/DHL UK, or Polar. Personally, I can't believe that DHL has actually gone out and gotten brand new a/c for anyone. LOL
