Question please to any tech savvy men or women.

With some half decent applications showing up like "Aero Docs" and the access to a less painful ijourney experience. One might be tempted to download however then confronted with the fact that you must also download the compulsory "Agent" app. Which gives the company the control over your iPad to wipe it clean if they see fit.

What other services does this "Agent" app give the company? For example are they able to see the iPads location and or files of personal nature?

Paranoid? Maybe, maybe not...

MDM systems can only do what the APIs in the Apple (or Android or Windows Phone or whatever) software lets them - for example it's not possible to remotely control hours of use, which is a pity as I wanted to be able to turn the kids ipads off at night!
For an idea of what's possible have a look at Cisco Meraki, which is free for up to 100 devices.

Thanks for the detailed info. I guess what would cement my thoughts is; do you, personally, as an informed technogeezer, happily have the "Agent" installed?

I would think if it's your own Ipad (so it's BYOD - Bring Your Own Device) if a remote wipe is initiated it should only wipe the company apps and data, leaving your stuff alone. There's two levels of wipe, enterprise and full. Your IT guys should be able to tell you what their policy is on that. If it's a company supplied device they would generally wipe the lot in the case of a loss/theft. I wouldn't have an issue either way as long as the policies are clear.
Although it's supposed to be possible to track devices using such things in practice it doesn't work very well, as you need all the location stuff turned on. Mine only gives it to the town as it's based on the Internet connection (no GPS etc enabled).
Apple is better at separating personal and business stuff on a device. This reddit thread is worth a read too...

My own view fwiw is that if my employer wants me to have a smartphone or tablet then they should provide it, but BYOD may be better for a small organisation.
