Violent storm in UK

Any disruptions caused by what appears to be a significant storm in Southern England?

mary meagher 28th October 2013 09:21

Blew though Oxfordshire in a hurry, big waves on Brighton Seafront, 78 mph gusts at RAF Odiham, Wales is wet, as usual.

They are trying very hard to make a big story out of it, with a few trees blown over. Michael Fish reappears as usual to make excuses.

More news here.

BusyB 28th October 2013 14:33

3 or more fatalities so nothing to worry about!!

Flying Clog 28th October 2013 17:42

Indeed, nothing to worry about.

Would you sleep in a static bloody caravan under a 30 foot tree with 80 mph winds?

Perhaps Darwin is sorting things out….

We've four 60ft pines at the front and, when D2 visits, if it's windy, she refuses to sleep in upstairs bedroom facing them.
Definitely has a better sense of self preservation than her old man (almost offed on several occasions - usually his own fault :O)

Flying Clog

Perhaps the young lady in question did not have any other choice, she obviously was not as fortunate as you to live in a "proper" house.:ugh:

mary meagher 29th October 2013 08:52

The young lady, only 17, like the rest of her family were sleeping in temporary quarters while their house was undergoing major building works.... My kids slept in caravans on our farm in Devon to free up their bedrooms for Bed and Breakfast guests, the only reliable crop back in 1977....

How unlikely is it your caravan will be the one to be flattened by a Leylandi?
She looked like a fine girl, her family must be heartbroken.

And how unlikely is it that the big tree in front of your house in London will be the one to land on your house, causing a gas leak that then causes three houses to disintegrate?

And how unlikely is it that only one old duffer will leave the planet because he was out driving in very unsuitable weather? Only one? Amazing, considering several hundred trees fell on the railway lines, and a lot of homes were without electricity....

All in all, the forecasters got it right. (Unlike Michael Fish) The authorities took sensible precautions.

For five people, including the 14 year old boy who was swept out to sea, fate was the hunter....makes no sense at all, any of it.

A footnote to this ramble: all those trees on the line leaving rail passengers stranded is not exactly an advertisement for the new HS boondoggle...at least on the roads you can detour around it....
