NEW A/Cs FOR CX

Apr 26, 2002

One of Asia's leading airlines, Cathay Pacific, today unveiled expansion plans as it announced orders for six new aircraft and held out the possibility of creating 800 new jobs over the next three years.

The carrier, based in Hong Kong, has ordered three Boeing 777-300 and three Airbus A330-300s. Deliveries will start next year and all the planes will be in service by 2004.

"Because Cathay Pacific managed itself carefully during the downturn, we are now able to plan for a better future," said David Turnbull, the airline's Chief Executive Officer and Deputy Chairman.

"This investment underlines our confidence in the future... and our continued effort to strengthen Hong Kong as the region's leading aviation hub."

The order for three Boeing planes is estimated as being worth USD$600 million to the US company.

Cathay orders six new planes

By Matthew Lee

CATHAY Pacific Airways has ordered six new passenger aircraft to meet growing customer demand and will recruit an extra 800 staff over the next three years.

"The six aircraft will be delivered from next year, so recruitment will not start too early. The market hasn't fully recovered and the number of customers still remains low,'' Cathay spokeswoman Maria Yu said.

The order includes three Boeing 777-300 and three Airbus A330-300 passenger aircraft. The new staff will be used to cover the additions to the fleet.

Cathay has been involved in a long- running union dispute with its pilots and sacked 50 of them last year.

However, it is uncertain how many pilots' jobs will be created when the new planes come into service.

"The Boeing 777-300 will fly mid-range trips such as Australia and Japan. The number of pilots varies on mid-range and long-haul flights. It's hard to break down the number of pilot or crew members to be hired,'' Yu said.

Cathay will take delivery of the first Airbus aircraft within the next two years for use on ultra-long-haul routes to Europe and North America.

The airline currently operates a fleet of 75 aircraft but has temporarily parked five passenger aircraft and two freighters as a result of the aviation downturn at the end of last year.

Four passenger aircraft and one freighter will be brought back into service later this year.

The decision to order the new planes reflected the company's commitment to maintaining long-term growth and the "current conditions in the supply market also make this an attractive time to purchase new aircraft'', it said in a statement.

"This is an investment in the future of Cathay Pacific and its staff and underlines our confidence in the future of Hong Kong,'' Cathay's chief executive officer and deputy chairman David Turnbull said.

"Because Cathay Pacific managed itself carefully during the downturn, we are now able to plan for a better future. Bear in mind that although today's market is weak and it is too early to pronounce a full recovery, these aircraft will not be delivered for two years,'' he said.

Yu also said the carrier had not talked to the pilots' union for a long time and there were no meetings scheduled.

A spokesman for the Hong Kong Aircrew Officers' Association welcomed the news, but said members' morale had been badly affected by the lengthy dispute.
