Checkerboard
There was a thread running some time back that had a few guys threatening to do a midnight run to repaint Checkerboard.
It got me thinking that it would be interesting to go see what was left of it, if anything. First of all I had to find it! Not have flown from Kai Tak, I had no familiarity with its exact location, but hey, it's big, got lots of red and white on it, and is stuck on the side of a hill. How hard could it be. Found a few pics on the web, tracked it down on Google earth, then google maps, that was the easy part. The challenge then was Hong Kong's love affair with road closures, construction, fences and "cannot" Got there eventually, hope I can get these pics to actually appear. Oh, as you can see, the painters still haven't got there http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/a...t/_MG_9549.jpg http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/a...t/_MG_9552.jpg http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/a...t/_MG_9561.jpg http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/a...t/_MG_9554.jpg http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/a...t/_MG_9568.jpg http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/a...t/_MG_9555.jpg Touchdown zone just to the right of the tall building http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/a...t/_MG_9570.jpg Looking back up the Approach from standing on top http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/a...t/_MG_9578.jpg Or just maybe the painters DID arrive!!! http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/a...t/_MG_9576.jpg |
Nice work!
Shame to see something so iconic in such disrepair. Typical of Hong Kong. |
Thank you very much for that!
Great pictures, they show how time passes by. Really appreciate the effort. |
I wanted it for my garden.Along with the Lightning and Concorde nose.:{
Nice to see the 40 storey Wonder blocks appearing in the old final approach area.Thought there might have been more by now.:hmm: |
Could you give me the coordinates? Thank you!
|
Don't worry, I just found it!

Nice pictures. I see that the football pitch is still there. You knew you were on profile when the rad-alt called '400' as the pitch disappeared from view below the nose. That's when you started the turn, finishing by 150Ft. Never tired of that approach. Everything since has been merely transportation.

Hey
Great photo's :) Good to see it again after so long. And yes as someone said - HK likes everything new, get rid of anything of historical significance. |
