Collegiality?
 
A recent debate has cropped up amongst my colleagues/friends which has split us pretty much down the middle. What does it mean to be collegial?

Is the guy who takes multiple sick leaves in a year to go attend bucks nights back home, see friends and family or just because he can’t be bothered with that destination this week, uncollegial, or is the guy who dobs him in worse?

In this economic climate when we’re asked to take SLS to ‘help the company in its time of need’, is it acceptable to stand by and knowing let your colleagues act dishonestly or is it an employee’s duty to speak up in the best interest of the company?

Who is more disliked? The individual who brazenly and openly couldn’t care less about biting the hand that feeds, or the whistle blower?

Definitely the whistle blower!

The company will, over a period of time, identify the malingerers and deal with them accordingly.

My advice to any would be splitters is... just do your job.

For the Dragonair guys. This is another thread reconfirming my thoughts that we should stay separate from Cathay Pilots.

As pilots, they seem to hate each other, more than anyone else. Perverse I know. I think they have been made that way by their management.

It is naive to think that any company has YOUR best interest as its priority. Mind your own business.

Slow down a sec and stop assuming I’m a snitch. I never have snitched and I don’t plan to; it doesn’t mean the issue doesn’t bug me. Speaking up will do nothing but jeopardize my own job and like the rest of you, I’m looking out for number 1. Attacking me is not the same as giving an opinion.

T101- the best thing for the company is for everyone to work towards a common goal. The company thrives, we keep our jobs. Everyone acts selfishly, the company suffers and we all in one way or another feel it.

And then - not like you care at all, but the guy inspiring me to post this thread is KA. He called in sick last night after securing a note from his very cooperative doctor and will land in SYD in a couple of hours for a few days off on KA’s tab. It’s not the 1st time he’s boasted publicly about it and he’s been getting away with it for the couple of years I’ve known him.

Max Reheat and Rook - unfortunately, my money is on him not getting caught.

not everything is what it seems maybe, I know i am being dispatched under MEL due my illness currently intermittent until specialists can figure it out. Not very nice

You get sick a lot at KA. On board catering a regular culprit before we even consider operations into China where allowances and hotel standards have been cut.

I've flown in a lot of places and the KA operation is the worst for general well being. Just have a look at the guys ! Sign off after 11pm prior a day off, spend your days off fighting a China bug.

The operation is so bad that's why we are top heavy in middle management pilots. They don't want to do overnights in the God forsaken, sub-standard hotels. Have a look at the GMO's line. The Chief Pilot's line. The training dept. Overnights ? Ha.

So KA guys are very often crook and some wear it as an honor.

And you are a disgraceful snitch with whom aviation karma will come home to roost !

You are most definitely a low life and the company will recognize your disloyalty to your so called friend as exactly that. You are a traitor,spy,snitch and no-one respects you.
Any persons sickness is confidential, did it ever occur to you that he may not be telling you accurate information about his illness as its none of your business. There are numerous reasons why someone may not be fit to fly an a/c. It is against the law to fly if not 100%.
Aviation would be better off without you...

Pulling sick days
 
The scum pulling sick days does no harm to the company. They just give the rest of us reserve and O days. So the rest of us get the !!!!s with crap rosters and disrupts working for the scum.

Still, I wont drop him in. In time the company will sort him out.

You could grow a pair and confront the scum. Tell him he is only dicking his work mates around. Perhaps he would like to start working on his reserve and O days.

Give the guy a break. Chaps only asking a question!

We all know we get ill because of various reasons doing this job, but as we must be 100% fit to fly, even minor illness will see us off work. It is also true to say that when ill the last thing you need is questions from your work collegues or even worse somebody telling the company they think you may be swinging the lead.

That said what do you do about an individual who is always claiming to be off sick when you know 110% he is in the pub/on holiday. The question is not about somebody who you have doubts about, but somebody who you know is taking the p:mad:! Most of the time it will have little or no effect on you, but how would you feel if his pretend sick days directly cost you money or a special occasion with family etc.


Case in point:

Pilot called in sick at last minute (was infact downtown with his mates!) Other crew member who was on ovetime has his roster changed to cover for the sickness, but as a result of the changes loses much of his overtime payment.

Trip to the bike shed in this instant would seem the appropriate course of action, but when the guy pulling a sickie shows no remorse and you know he has done it before and will do it again, who is the low life then?

Before you all get on your high horse and shoot squares down in flames think about this:

If an individual steals constantly (be it money, time off or anything else you consider of value) either directly or indirectly from you or your mates. - What would you do?

It's none of your business "who" called in sick or "why", imo.
Do your job and mind your own business, while knowing you choose to
have a better work ethic than some people.
