New SO, which cos?
As a new joining SO, which conditions of service will I be under? cos '99?
|
what does your contract say? anyone joining after jan108 is on the cos08
|
Please tell me you are not a new SO who has joined without knowing what COS you are under :ugh::ugh::ugh:
|
No, haven't been given start date or contract yet. Was given some salary/pension/leave/housing details with the interviews, not much more.
|
COS08, also called "C Scale."

Your original question regarding starting COS was a very basic "I should know this". How can you possibly make any decisions on your future without knowing the very basics. Was given some salary/pension/leave/housing details with the interviews, not much more. There is still time to reconsider your decision to accept a job here. Think about it. |
I was under the impression that COS08 did not have much effect on new SO's, and was more a hit on F/Os? Would this be fair to assume?
Just trying to do some research! Thanks. |
Lets put it very, very simple. CoS08 is NOT an improvement for you as an DES/O or DEF/O PAX. What do you think? CX are improving CoS.. Arrhahahhahh... :D

We know that you wish to work at The Cathay Pacific Group so just come over. There is no reason for you to see the contract before you come.
It is only a piece of paper and under Hong Kong law, it is worth nothing. We have told all pilots that the only change is the pay scale but it is not entirely true. There are many more clauses “at the discretion of the company” and we can and will change company policy as we see fit. Even if a policy is in your contract it means nothing i.e. upgrade policy. If it suits us, we will upgrade second officers out of seniority without compensation to you. We are doing this now but depending on our training position that may drag out to years. If you don’t like it, take us to court. We will hire Direct Entry First Officers while they may be behind you on The Cathay Pacific Seniority List you may have to remain as a second officer longer. Again on COS 08, you are not entitled to by-pass pay. While it is our prerogative to hire Direct Entry First Officers on a base we are looking at replacing the basing agreement not based on Seniority. It may be type and position dependent. We will be looking at the basing agreement later this year. When you do finally upgrade you may not be eligible for a base if that is your desire. Most likely with your flying experience you will need to remain in Asia for a number of years to gain experience flying The Cathay Pacific Way. So come join The Cathay Pacific Group, we are the best compensated airline in Hong Kong,, Asia and The Middle East. Most likely our salary and benefits far exceed your present salary and benefits. As a plus you get to fly shiny new jets and that should be enough. You don’t have to worry about future benefits at the moment and by the time you do, it will be too late for you to move on. To My Bonus. The Management |
You don't get a copy of the COS until they give you a hard class date. He just said he did not have one yet. He hasn't joined anything and if he gets the COS then he'll have a chance to say no if he desires. At least the guy is trying to get it before that time.
|
And if we weren't such a disjointed group, new joiners wouldn't have to ask which COS they'll be employed under. :(
|
right, glad we got that cleared up. I was asking as I have a copy of cos99 which I got through a friend last year. I had also heard that cos08 wasn't relevant to SOs, duff gen. So I look forward to receiving the contract and making a decision based on that. Thanks for the input.

there is some stuff relevant to S/Os, so have a good look at it.
All the best H.10:ok: |
I think no bypass for 24 months is very relevant to new SO's joining under COS08.
MAX:cool: |
Best you look at it carefully. The gist of COS 08 is that you will take a lot longer to advance due to higher retirement ages/ direct entry FO's and soon to come reduction in crewing levels on long haul flights.
All these will slow down your career substantially. On COS 08 you will get ZERO compensation for this. If you are younger than 25 - fine. If you are older than 30 - think carefully. |
Good luck to the company if they try 3man ULH. The sickness rates are quite high right now as some fleets have been working their collective butts off. Had a med appt the other week and the doc said that he has noticed a significant increase in fatigue related issues over the last couple of months. No wonder CC are frantically ringing around to find people to fill holes. Even the draconian sickness management program won't be able to bully many into working when they shouldn't be.
If you work when you shouldn't be, not only do you you spread any sickness around the rest of the crew, but if something happens, the company are going to be the last to protect you. BTW, to the chap I flew with some weeks ago that was coughing and spluttering all the way to xxxx, thanks alot. I now have what you had. Up yours!! |
