Absenteeism Management Program 2

Gentlemen:

I believe the company is somewhat scared. The more worried they become; threats will intensify (absenteeism Management Program). The more unity they see from us (Our Association) the more anxious they will. This can be considered a game to most, but is the most serious game some of us will ever encounter. We are fighting for our very existence. If we do not receive a favorable contract for everybody (I mean everybody), we will be at the mercy of the Company's interpretation of the rules, pay, retirement, benefits, etc). Look at our recent housing benefits for one, the recruitment to a MAS base, Absenteeism Management Program, etc. Any ideas what will be next?

Everytime we get the upper hand, the company gives us another tackle 1. Extending on B-Scale 2. MAS base 3. Absenteeism Management Program 4. Not allowing tempo base by discriminating against people.

The "Absenteeism Management Program" is a serious attack on our already fragile safety circumstances. The company is linking the chain and guiding us towards an accident. With this program, people are showing up for work sick because they are frightened the company will punish them (no temporary base, no First Officer or Command upgrade, dismissal, etc.). By them showing up sick, it affects the rest of the crew, thereby reducing the safety of the operation.
We are overworked, plagued by chronic and acute fatigue, roster instability, stressed by the continued attack on our contract, intimidation, etc. How long before something happens?

As a professional group we should be doing something about it. This is what I suggest:

We have a confidential safety reporting system. Use it. Everytime you see someone at work that is sick or appears to be sick, we have a professional obligation to report this to the CAD. This even applies to us. If you believe that you are being intimidated to go to work, write a confidential report. It should not go that far because you have a legal responsibility (according to the Hong Kong ANO's) not to fly when you believe you are suffering from circumstances in which you are not able to perform your duties.

Cathay Pacific believes it can afford an accident (it has already stated so), but we and the travelling public around the world do not want to be the ones sitting in that aircraft when it happens. The CAD and the travelling public in Hong Kong have to be informed of the diminishing safety of our airline.

The people of Hong Kong and Hong Kong as a whole cannot afford an accident. It is the few people, in our Management, who are on the road to selling out of Hong Kong. If and when it does happen, how do you think it will affect Hong Kong?

Again, this "Absenteeism Management Program" is affecting flight safety. We cannot allow this to turn into what Frank Lorenzo did to Eastern Airlines.

Know you history or you are deemed to repeat it.

The public does not know that they are prepared (and have the insurance against) a hull loss (350 people), and are doing everything they can for today's dollar. Keep it quiet for heaven's sake. I weep in my sleep, will these morons ever learn.

Gentlemen, just to keep you updated. Very soon you will all be provided with a confidental reporting number for the FAA. If you are on ANY north american operation, you may call this and report any incident of 'crew sickness' that is included in the operating crew due to 'management coercion'. The FAA has a long history of utter confidentiality on these issues, and will not even identify the flight number or date. They will compile a 'dossier' of incidents, and then 'invite' CX management to address their 'concerns'. Needless to say, a strong response by our aircrew will result in more trouble for Barley and Co than they ever thought possible. We MUST use EVERY channel available to defeat and humiliate these cretins. The FAA takes very seriously ANY implication to aviation safety in their airspace, especially by foreign carriers who are violating rules that apply to US carriers. I can assure you that your efforts will not go unrewarded. In addition, steps are being taken to place articles in many of the main business and literary journals, both here in Canada, and the US. I suggest those of us based in other countries take similar steps. This pathetic attempt at company intimidation will result in their very undoing. Slick Nick, The Pygmy and all you other pathetic individuals who call yourselves managers, be warned that the results of this mis-guided and venal policy will be layed in your laps. The first incident that is attributable to a 'medically unfit' aircrew who was operating WILL result in civil and criminal charges.....if not in HK, then you WILL end up answering in another country. You WILL pay a heavy price for this......

HOLY !!!!!!!!
You mean an airline company can force pilots to fly while they're sick!? With no disrespect to all you professional pilots, if I was a passenger on a plane and I know that the pilots are feeling a little whoosy, I'd be !!!!!ting in my pants. My desire to become a professional pilot is the fact that it is professional group of individuals able to providing 100% of their knowledge and experience in their jobs.
As consumers and the general public, we look up to you guys to maneuver a couple hundred tons of steel and whiz it at over 500 mph through the skies and bring us to our destinations safely and efficiently.
You guys are all professionals and looked up upon by us wannabes. Please maintain the professionalism and honour bestow upon you by us.

Another article is about to come out in the Globe and Mail here in Canada. I also understand that the NY Times and the LA Times are also planning articles. It is worth noting that now that CX has 'officially' denied the policy, legaly they have no leg to stand on in enforcing any provision in it. Once again, arrogance and belligerence have led our management down another 'dead end'........straight into humiliation. Couldn't happen to a nicer bunch of people.

RRAAMJET 3rd May 2001 21:26

Well, this is absolutely astonishing.

I heard about this while I was on vacation ( FROM A REGULAR CX PASSENGER, NO LESS, CHATTING TO ME AT THE POOL!!!). I could not believe it . Talk about taking deliberate aim at your foot and pulling the trigger. This policy WILL DIRECTLY AFFECT THE BOTTOM LINE; it's all over the airline word-of-mouth network here in the US. This is potentially serious stuff - the FAA is under scrutiny itself right now, and will jump all over this to be shown to be actively policing foreign carriers. And a big fish, too......much kudos for the inspectors.

Unbelievable.

Guys,
I'm no pilot, just an observer, but you guys really need to pull together an put a stop to this nonsense, it's a series of schemes by management, to erode your
situation. You can't let them do it. They can only get so many scabs, shut them down until they cop on to themselves. I have no stake in this but it's sad to see a venerable, highly regarded airline like CX go down this slippery slope, seemingly with no escape route.

The Resistance 3rd May 2001 22:23

Kanga, you are right of course. It is well past time we took firm action against the abuses of this management. I can happily tell you though that things are about to take a dramatic turn in favour of standing up to the venality and malignancy that has been maliciously visited on us these past 7 years.
