Can anyone tell me what Cathay means in Cathay Pacific?

Thanks,

IF2

BahrainLad 28th January 2005 11:51

It's a very very old name for "China."

here you go

Cathay
Related: Chinese History

(kăthā´) , name for North China used by medieval Europeans, derived from the Khitan (or Khitai), a Manchurian people who conquered S Manchuria and N China and founded the Liao dynasty (937-1125). S China was referred to as Mangi. Long after the end of the Liao, the Russians and some central Asian people continued to and still use Kitai as the name of China. The description of Cathay by Marco Polo (c.1254-c.1324) in his journal helped popularize the name in medieval Europe.

brakedwell 28th January 2005 13:36

Surely it would have been more correct to have called a Honk Kong based airline Mangi Pacific? Come to think of it that name doesn't have quite the same ring!

cavortingcheetah 28th January 2005 16:53

;)

Here's another teaser for you then.
Braathens used to be known as BRAATHENS SAFE. Guess what SAFE stood for:uhoh:

Oblaaspop 28th January 2005 18:14

cavortingcheetah 29th January 2005 09:32

I may be wrong here but I thought it was South Asian and Far Eastern:O

superpilut 29th January 2005 16:03

Mangi Pacific would be appropriate for a wholesale fruitshipping company..:p

Jetset320 29th January 2005 16:06

Re Braathens, it's actually South America and Far East

Such A Bad Experience Never Again. Really!

In the slot 9th February 2005 16:28

Actually, QANTAS is more likely an abbreviation for .................Quick And Nasty Typical Australian Service........!!!

Taiwanese carrier Far Eastern Air Transport decided to abbreviate themselves to "FAT" rather than "FEAT" for some reason!!!!

Who speaks Polish??? What about "LOT?"

shortly 9th February 2005 23:12

Wasn't he some biblical character who got in the deep and dark?

VR-HFX 9th February 2005 23:24

Hong Xing 10th February 2005 03:41
