While we’re at it, let’s get the new people joining marketing to do a couple of months in Facility management! Maybe they’ll get an appreciation for cleaning staff.

Lets get the new IT guys to take a 773 for a spin around the block with pax, just so they can gain appreciation for pilots.

I’m all for cross department networking (something GH was completely against) but this should be in the realm of their actual profession.

I’m not opposed to a pilot being pulled from the line to join IOC or Crew Ops or ENG or some related department, but to have them do something completely unrelated to their position, and try and justify it is sheer lunacy and is pure desperation of a failing management.

Don’t worry though, your jobs are safe and the HK government will of course be happy to buy a controlling slice and keep the status quo

I'm disappointed that all the responses to this are negative. What do you believe your job to be as an airline pilot? Is it just to fly to aircraft or do you have some responsibility for the "walk on freight"? If the latter then when do you now get a chance to interact with them, other than when you are delayed on the ground and can open the flight deck to visitors? Know your audience might be applicable?

Surely this is just a wind up? Concentrating on our job of safely flying the “walk on freight” is what the passengers want and is the ultimate responsibility. As if they give a f### about you checking them in and putting a tag on their bag.

Pay us extra if we now have to do some completely different job that takes our focus away from the more important job of being a professional pilot. This isn’t GA.

It would be interesting if one of the SO's works at the staff travel counter. I would love to hear what goes on there, as it seems like they don't give a hoot if you get on or not.

More than once I've been sent home with empty seats on the plane. (and it wasn't weight limited)

What makes you think that everyone in the program comes from this entitled generation? Have you met all of them? Did you know that some of them have X amount of work experiences prior to getting this job? And by the way, if you think this is such a good idea, how come they have waited for so long to push through?
The ISD is scrambling for cabin crew as well, does it mean you would also support the initiative of the cadets serving peanuts and pushing trolly on the plane? (If there was such an initiative in the future.) Frankly, I think you and the management trying to justify this action by giving a load of crap, just like all sales people.

The apprenticeship mentality and the good old “initiation” clause. Unfortunately that’s not how the world works anymore, and I am glad those days are over!

Did you learn anything about flying by load bags, washing planes and sweeping hangar floors? Anything more than what you could have learnt washing your own car and sweeping your own garage?

I value my time enough knowing that the above “chores” are not going to excel me in my chosen career and speaks more of a person’s willingness to be exploited.

Time is precious, and if you expect cadets to go through this “hazing” phase then:
1. The cadets don’t value their time.
2. The company does and will not ever value them.

I forget which airline put their cadet pilots onto cabin crew duties for a season?, but being a customer service person uses different skills and abilities to those required by a pilot. And requires different training.

Some pilots do have sufficient interpersonal skills to "face" customers, but that is not what we were selected for - as far as I know - and certainly not something that we were ever trained for.

JT has always been sipping the koolaid. In fact, anyone that goes near the 3rd floor is an avid enjoyer of the CX koolaid. The only exception I can think of in recent times was PH but he’s since left for greener pastures…
