CX pilots salaries to be pegged closer to hours flown as airline revamps

"Annual basic pay for captains will be ‘aligned with market levels"

EK will be miles ahead now. 2.3 mil HKD ...no tax and fee housing. Sin pay less tax than us and have cheaper housing.

The Pfund will be a minimum $1500 HKD per month.

ACMS 14th Sep 2018 05:55

Boy some bs spin about housing allowance in that article.

Slasher1 14th Sep 2018 07:22

“I’d have to find out what the promotion prospects are first because the pay isn’t going to cover living expenses in Hong Kong for an expat,”

Just about says it all.

I'LL bet someone falling for the scheme bets on hard 6's at craps.

Freehills 14th Sep 2018 07:31

Market levels = HX and HKE I guess in their view.

Attract experienced pilots for less pay and benefits, still with 12 years to command and living in the most expensive city in the world and a P.fund that even after cashing it out to retire you'll still need food stamps to survive.....

SOPS 14th Sep 2018 08:23

How the mighty have fallen.........

Been the case since 1993! . CX needed 5000 hours in those days. Then 3000 for B scale DEFO. Then TP like DASH 8 . Now , 500 hours total?

Anyway , as long as the pilots are happy to join & and live within their means, then who are we to criticise?

It wouldn’t be me , but hey, I value living in space rather than a shoe box or sharing. But if you take guys in their early 20s , they can adapt . The money will attract them, eap if the company puts the whole package in the adverts like for thise Chinese contracts. Earn Circa 1.7 million as first year FO.

we all know the story .

cannot 14th Sep 2018 11:20

After reading that article , and the cr-p being spewed by the jellyfish I want to puke . This latest contract just proves that he ain’t the smartest tack in the box . How in the face of a worldwide pilot shortage does CX think it’s going to recruit experienced talent . Just on this page alone there are adverts for DEC with commuting rosters in China with good salaries .
The loss of experience will accelerate as the COS deteriorate , I have never seen so many adverts for pilots in my life .
cathay has shot itself in the foot this time . Someone screws up big time with fuel hedging and the only people to be punished are the pilots

Like I intimated in the other thread cannot, Indos and Filipinos will save this airline. No reason they shouldn’t be good if we train them well before we leave/retire. Last one lights etc.

rhoshamboe 14th Sep 2018 11:35

Guys, there is no shortage of crew. There is only a shortage of crew that we would want up the pointy end. Cx management don't care about experience or ability.

Foxdeux 14th Sep 2018 13:19

It's unfortunate that a lot of people see pilots as just glorified bus drivers, and thus pay them as such.

donpizmeov 14th Sep 2018 14:32

It would seem CX to muppets are learning from the EK muppets .
in a past life a song use to say “blunties they don't bother me". It seems this is no longer the case .

*blunty being a non aircrew person .

I agree, don't forget Indians and Malaysians, they'll all move into shared accommodation in Tung Chung and commute. With the wages they earn here, they'll be living like kings back home

Slasher1 14th Sep 2018 18:29

Yup.

Refugee pilots and home-grown that don't know any better.

Ten or twelve to a boarding house, trainer's gleefully training them and collecting THEIR dough, enough of the rest hanging around long enough to get the new guys spun up, and Bob's Your Uncle.

Any problems come well downline when the new guys (maybe) figure out what has been happening.

There IS some solace in those who have figured this out and bailed to go to a first world carrier where there really IS a pilot shortage. And that even on a regional salary (in that location) you live better than your lot now.

The conspiracy theorists I guess missed this one although we probably should've seen it coming with how locals and expats hire domestics (who work very very hard, are in some cases not treated particularly well, and paid very little compared with what it would cost anywhere else).

unitedabx 14th Sep 2018 18:34

The transformation is almost complete. Once THE best airline in the world, renowned for it's service, innovation, longhaul non-stop flying, expatriate pilots and forward thinking management. It is now a third rate legacy carrier, with mediocre service ( not in the top 20 for years ). copycat product, cheap local pilots and a management tier not fit for purpose. All we need now ( and it is coming ) is a serious accident like Xiamen or Emirates and the transformnation will be complete. Goodbye Cathay, it was nice flying with you.

FOR THOSE LOOKING IN FROM THE OUTSIDE:

What this article fails to address is the fine print items in COS '18. Not only will your salary be lower and heavily dependent upon productivity, it will have many fewer pay points for all ranks that would normally increase your compensation annually throughout your career, with a few exceptions. Your guaranteed days off will decrease, your positioning pay (as a passenger) will decrease to half of the current rate, your annual leave entitlement will decrease, and your company retirement contribution will drop by 36% from current levels. Many of these items were already at lower levels than competitors in Europe, USA, Middle East, etc for current employees. Second class citizen? You bet.

AND who gets to tell ya when you fly ?

Why that’d be the company of course. One way street.

So even if and when you approach the productivity ‘goals’ they can always throttle you back unilaterally to save money.

While keeping ya on reserve in case they really need ya.

So you’ll always be chasing fleeting needles and moving goalposts.

Looks a lot like the Nigerian Prince needs help moving money email approach to me.

Frogman1484 14th Sep 2018 23:00

Where can you find the Cos18 documents?

reazasassain 15th Sep 2018 04:28

There's no pilot shortage at CX. They no longer hire qualified pilots. The main source of recruits are College kids with little passion for the industry. This is the new normal. Thankfully we have a mass of trainers willing to train their replacement and help CX continue its race to the bottom.
