When your selection criteria include the ability to pay (self selected) you get a lower standard of pilot than if you select according to ability and thus select the best.
Obvious I know, but the obvious doesn't seem to relevant here.

95 courses in Adelaide cancelled due to not enough suitable candidates. I guess if we've got to hire the rejects from every other airline, we might as well make them pay for it.

95 courses? Thats a hell of lot of courses! How many cadets per course do the normally do? Pay to join Cathay. The wheels are really falling off the industry.

Meanwhile the competition actively targets current CX SO's.

Ba doesnt, Klm doesn't, none of the American carriers do..

Well currently CX quote a training cost from 0 hours to completion at FTA as $1.1 million HKD, obviously includes accommodation

Interesting that the response to lack of applicants is to charge. Hardly seems an incentive...

I would be very surprised if cadets are not applying for the free training deal. If there are training slots cancelled in Australia, it would most likely have concerned direct entry individuals because the SO deal is just not good enough, and DEFO was not on offer for the longest of time for most of them. About cadets paying for their training, well, without keeping it completely seperate from ability that inevitably ends in a quality reduction of your staff.

I don’t have anything against an individual contributing to their own basic training, if anything it will stop the “Oh I didn’t think to become a pilot until about two years ago and saw it was a good deal” type of individual from applying. As long as your financial situation doesn’t affect your ability to be eligible and a good financing deal is available I think it’s only a good thing if one has skin in the game.

Sad to see the latest manifestation of a once great airline now unmistakenly mired in its death throes.

Don’t delay the pursuance of an appropriate exit strategy any longer than is necessary, the writing is on the wall.

I think the complete inability of our management to appropriately address the FACTS regarding their abysmal treatment of their pilots (especially RH's comments, which proved to me that nothing will change without all out war) demonstrates that all they are trying to do is keep us 'subdued' until after CNY. Then they will undoubtedly attack us with both barrels blazing. So, if you have the chance of a proper career elsewhere, I suggest you make the most of that. In the meantime, let's cause them as much misery as they've caused us. At this point we have NOTHING left to lose. If the operation isn't affected, then kiss any chance of even a semblance of a 'career' goodbye. I'm doing my part, what about the rest of my colleagues?

Exactly my thought, CX is just regressing to the mean. If I were a Mckinsey Consultant the initio training would be an eye sore for the bottom line. It's just like the 9 abreast seating on the 777, nobody in their right might mind should keep it. It doesn't help that the airline industry is so cut throat with slim margins and state owned airlines from the ME slaughtering non-subsidized airlines. CX WAS a premium airline but due to poor management decisions they're now just another airline and the Pilot's are paying for it.

I hope they realise that with 2 s/o’s per flight there will be zero demand for f/o’s in the future....better get used to the view from the back seat!
