It is the middle of November and the bidding system for next years leave has not even been opened yet. Hence the rumour that the DFO has unilaterally cancelled leave.

Leave cannot be unilaterally cancelled, or even waived by mutual agreement. Every company in HKG is obligated to provide a minimum of two calendar weeks leave to all employees.
While AT is an incarnation of The Wicked Witch of the West, this is one thing she and her legions of flying monkeys are unable to do.

Yes two weeks if she wants to but by law we have to get all leave and outstanding in the following year. They arent permitted to do that consecutive years

Read your CoS. It clearly states the number of days you are entitled to each calendar year, the (limited) circumstances in which you might receive less, and the time limit on it being given. Leave NTC normally comes out late Nov/early Dec.

I also know of several (which means there are many) individuals who are waiting so see if the 13th month arrives as it should. If not, then that will 'seal the deal' as far as their plans on leaving. And I think you can count on hundreds of cabin and grounds staff as well. Needless to say, paying it to our colleagues at KA, and the bases (incorporated into their salaries) without paying it to those in HK will just reinforce why this company does not deserve to retain the competent and experienced staff that they are taking advantage of. Corporate greed is taking this company to the place it belongs: the trash heap.

Cathay Pacific is a great airline that is going through a painful time but to confine the airline and all the wonderful people who work here to the trash heap is beneath contempt. Please leave as you demand of everyone else. Please find another hobby where you can whinge, whine, complain to your hearts content.

So the airline is struggling. What is the minimum statutory redundancy that Hkg law would allow the airline to offer should it come down to a 'redundancy' or 'sign the new COS' scenario. Seeing as we know a new COS is brewing and will be offered soon, whether the pilot body likes it or not. The company and Hkg pilot haters will be loving it as they will see this as the screwing you will get for the screwing you got.

Not correct for many CX pilots. Here's an extracted Q&A from the government website on the employment ordinance:

Q1. How many days of annual leave should be given in a year?
A1. An employee is entitled to 7 days' annual leave with pay after serving every period of 12 months under a continuous contract.

An employee's entitlement to paid annual leave will increase progressively to a maximum of 14 days according to his length of service as follows:
Years of Service Annual Leave Entitlement
1 7
2 7
3 8
4 9
5 10
6 11
7 12
8 13
9 or above 14

One of the downsides of us having to put up with a seniority system, is the small bonus of a clause that governs when any number of crew are required to be made redundant, and goes along the lines of:
"Termination will apply in reverse order of date of joining as listed on the CPA Common Redundancy Lists, i.e. last in first out. "

However, at the rate that dissolusioned crew are going to be either jumping ship, retiring early, or going on 6 months sick leave etc, I doubt that this clause will be needed in the near future.

However, if the shufflers of the deck chairs manage to keep the airline going, but complete their last couple of years woeful stuff ups by shrinking the airline, then perhaps this clause will have to come in to play.

Poor old Mike Hardy will be turning in his grave at the woeful management currently being exhibited.
Now THERE was a leader - not because he was ex military, but simply because he was an honest principled man you could trust.

The ONLY reason 13th month will be paid at KA is because it's in the contract, it's not discretionary. If it was, they wouldn't pay it.

who said anything about us not getting 13th month? We have an operating profit. Not only that, we are putting huge sums in the bank. We would have to have the worst airline managers in the world to not be making money in Hong Kong.

We have a natural hedge built in with fuel surcharges. The reason the company hedges was to show that Hong Kong is not that profitable and to keep more airlines out of CX's own back yard (it's called strategy folks).

I think that most pilots do not really care, because they are jumping ship. That's sad. We already have given the company concessions over the last 10 years by not getting proper raises. What really floors me is why trainers are still training. They would have gotten a bigger payrise by all quitting simultaneously.

It fascinates me how CX management seem oblivious to the looming crisis they are creating, which WILL result in them losing hundreds of pilots, and finding that their name is toxic amongst aircrew worldwide. The training costs will eat up any savings their incompetent bean counters predict they will save. The death spiral of a once great airline continues apace. Sad.

Interesting editorial in this mornings Standard. Suggests that CX has passed the point of no return and that HKA will become the favoured carrier in HK. Politics will drive the final nail in the coffin of CX.

Why not read a real newspaper ! The FT has for months been spelling out the demise of CX and the likely buyers or salvage brokers. Boeing has suggested in it's broadsheets that it expects a long time customer in "the east" to go under within months. At the Dubai Airshow last week Airbus announced the recent KA orders were only letters of intent ( not real orders ) and it would no longer be inviting CX onto any future aircraft design panels because "in all likelihood CX will be absorbed by a mainland carrier by 2020".

Regardless of anything printed in the press, working here makes you realise that this airline is doomed. And anyone who has buried their heads in the sand and is still working here is doomed as well if they stay. The industry is in the midst of the greatest growth and opportunity in it's history. The best time to obtain employment and a career with a decent carrier in a decent part of the world is NOW. Don't miss your chance to exit the nightmare that has become CX. It will only get worse, MUCH worse from this point forward. Those of your colleagues who have already left are the smart ones. They figured it out and cut their losses. When will YOU do the same. Don't be left without a chair when the music stops. Those around you are already interviewing and awaiting course dates.

Just back from my two interviews in Europe. Offered both positions with CX pilots highly respected worldwide ( excluding HKG of course ).
Most of the questions were about "what has happened at CX to make you want to leave ?" I ran out of time with my answers but these companies are very aware that the pilot shortage is happening and good pilots are hard to find and keep.
