HK Express chief’s future in doubt after flight cancellation chaos ahead of holiday period

Budget airline has been plunged into turmoil after sudden flight cancellations caused chaos for thousands of holidaymakers

The boss of a budget airline is facing an uncertain future, with some sources claiming he has been sacked, after a string of cancelled flights to and from Hong Kong caused chaos before a busy holiday period.

Hong Kong Express Airways’ chief executive officer Andrew Cowen did not deny rumours he had been fired on Wednesday and said he would release a statement soon.

One source close to HK Express said Cowen was out of the top job but could stay on in a different capacity, while another source said the chief executive officer was unlikely to stay on if offered a more junior role.

A wider management reshuffle is expected to take place, with one change already made. Human resources director, Christopher Thomas, was replaced by Stanley Yau – a counterpart at sister company Hong Kong Airlines – on Wednesday.

he cancelled 18 flights. Our guys lost billions and got promoted....

Lowkoon...lol !! Love the ironic insight. Couldn't have summed it up better. Shows you , a) what a joke this airline has become, and b) the potential if we cause this airline considerable operational pain during the next 90 days. Everyone here knows what they have to do. Me, i'm in bed with my flu medicine. :ok:

Future NOT in doubt. He was fired yesterday. Imagine that, an airline exec in HK getting fired for not doing his job properly :hmm:. I beseech everyone reading consider this; Anna deliberately did not state what the new housing terms they are considering will be for ONE simple reason: they are waiting to assess our reaction. If we cause them immense operational pain over the next 90 days, they will be forced to back down. If we do NOTHING, they will basically have been given the green light to trash nearly every single condition we currently possess. The decision for each one of us is simple: either lie down like sheep for the slaughter, or fight back and cause them as much pain as possible. Not really a tough decision when you think about it. If we do nothing, there will be no career worth fighting for. Something for our more junior colleagues to consider: it is better to have the fight now and establish a proper relationship between employer and employee, than allow yourselves to be seduced by AT's vague promises, only to find yourselves 10-15 years from now being attacked and threatened (as my generation are now experiencing). You would be better off establishing reality now and giving yourselves a chance of a proper career elsewhere than being sucked into a miserable career, family life and retirement at CX.

To sum up: look at what just happened to HKE's CEO, and realise that you DO have the power to effect a similar change at CX. The public, the press and the regulator cannot stand similar operational chaos at CX as has just happened at HKE. It is imperative that we give them that very outcome to demonstrate that we will not be treated with the contempt they have shown us.

Yes but Traf
Im yammering Im slacking im pruning
Im on the Union website
Im even writing letters so I am taking action !!!

Trafalgar 5th Oct 2017 00:10

Why don't you just take a few days off work and kill two birds with one stone...

Liam Gallagher 5th Oct 2017 00:23

Traf,

All well and good taking an individual action, but to have the effect you desire,- actions need to be coordinated.

Perhaps it's time for the AOA to organise a Xmas party. Friday 22 December seems like a good date. I imagine the 22nd is during the Xmas Bid Embargo, so the only way to ensure attendance would be a PRA. The AOA wouldn't need a very big venue, because so many would be "sick" and it would be madness to show up at a social function when "sick".

If you get my drift....

lol...!! It's the flu season. It's also that time of life where i'm having knee trouble, shoulder trouble, headaches and lately, very dark thoughts. I'm exercising the responsibility of my license by not being at work. Besides, there's a football match I wanted to attend this coming weekend. As they say, 'eye trouble'...can't see myself going to work.

We have 90 days. Maximum pain. Nothing else will suffice.

Traf - I agree with all your points, but our generation did FA when B scales came, when HKAPA came etc. To now decide to fight because it is your pocket being hit directly - yeah, can understand the anger, but stable doors, horses and closing them too late comes to mind

Freehills. You may be right about the barn doors. The difference is that when it first happened back in 93/4, we didn't quite appreciate the long term goals of the management. Now there is no excuse. Anyone who thinks their terms and conditions are safe, and that they can establish a career that they can count on for 20+ years with CX is dreaming. We ALL see now just how meaningless the managements statements are. Time we reasserted the value of our skills and commitment. If not, then just lie down and be sheared (or slaughtered). I can only speak for myself, but I am willing to make sure the company sees the difference between my goodwill, and lack thereof. If thousands of us do the same, then they will panic. There is NO way the regulator or traveling public can endure a dramatic lack of reliability in CX's operation. It just takes our resolve to prove the point. We have 90 days to demonstrate that resolve.
