Ex B-HUL hard landing - AMS

Might need a look at the I/B flaps and a few other things.

Watch the spoilers.
Did he commence a GA in the bounce then change his mind?

AtoBsafely 28th Apr 2017 02:44

The spoilers should be armed for landing and will automatically deploy with weight on the main gear and thrust levers at/near idle. In this case it looks like they started to deploy and then retracted during the bounce and deployed again on the second touchdown.

Ouch!

stilton 28th Apr 2017 06:50

Never fail to be impressed by the 747 and i'm amazed it bounced, would have thought
any possibility of upward motion would have been eliminated by that impact.

According to rumors on another forum this aircraft was operating again shortly afterwards.
Surprised there was no damage.

Arfur Dent 28th Apr 2017 11:29

Combination of AUW vs G on touchdown will govern the conduct during the subsequent "Heavy Landing Check" that should be carried out after such an arrival. Straightforward plot on a graph. I did a real bone cruncher in a lightweight 747F and it turned out to be a non event (I phoned the Haeco guys after they'd done the check.)
Amazingly strong aircraft eh? Thanks Mr Boeing

oriental flyer 28th Apr 2017 16:12

I'm amazed that the aircraft didn't need a total gear change after that impact ,that wasn't a landing it was a crash the only thing that stopped the aircraft going down was the ground

MENELAUS 28th Apr 2017 22:00

No it wasn't a crash. Not even close. You should see what Boeing do to them at Moses Lake. That was a non event by comparison.

stilton 29th Apr 2017 06:11

Interesting, Mr Boeing builds an extremely strong aircraft, I wonder
if an Airbus would have shown that much resilience ?

Farman Biplane 29th Apr 2017 07:10

A50 seems to be copping a beating and fairing well.

Jesus wept.....that would loosen all your fillings.....bit late on the round out hodgkins. +2g
I seem to recall it was Hoskins, rather than Hodgkins, who was a bit late on the round out. ;)

cxorcist 30th Apr 2017 00:54

Good thing it wasn't an MD-11. It might have lost a wing and flipped over.

galdian 30th Apr 2017 03:23

Looks like the aircraft landed slightly left wing down, I'm just surprised the left main gear didn't vacate through the top of the wing!

That gear must have copped all the initial impact even if just for the shortest time.

MENELAUS 30th Apr 2017 12:17

Hoskins it was.

VR-HFX 1st May 2017 09:14

In this case Hodgkins is probably more appropriate...symptoms include fever, sweats and weight loss.

MENELAUS 1st May 2017 10:01

And hardly a joking matter; if you've ever seen anyone die from it.
