Cx new joiner terms change
Those interviewing over the last month have been told the new joiner sis incentive will no longer be given to new joiner ae or tt pilots.
|
Yawn. It wasn't offered as an incentive to join. It was offered as an incentive to stay. And it's failed, in as much as it hasn't deterred anyone from looking elsewhere.
That said, I'm glad I got it. I've been able to buy so much gel for my spikey (arse) hair. |
So stop joining!
|
It won't prevent enough people from joining.
But unfortunately, like previously, it might prevent the best from joining. |
Every SO I have flown with recently are all blown away by the cost of living in HK. We tried to tell you all!!
Maybe YOU struggling SO's should be spreading the word to would be joiners. Once the honeymoon is over...about 12 months, reality sets in and so will your debt living in one of the most expensive citys in the world. |
I'm surprised they haven't come up with a Pay To Fly scheme yet.
"Want to fly those big shiny jets? For the low price of US$30,000 a year, you too can pretend to be a pilot!"... ...Then watch them sell their mothers. |
I'm sure the last thing the C scalers want to hear in the middle of the night is a whinging D scaler asking "why didn't you do more to improve that ****ty contract I signed?"
Lets stop this degradation of new contracts here and now. Join me in proposing that there will be no industrial peace until D scale conditions are improved. To stop the rot it will be worth the diluting of any agreement we may get regarding HKPA. |

You have to be crazy to sign a "D" scale package. The problem is that way too many kids still believe this is a cool and worthy job. Many will run head first into it no matter the cautionary tales from the crusty old farts who are watching it all fall to pieces. They'll amass any amount of debt with the belief that it will all be worth it in a couple of decades, and when they're offered a cost-free way to get in by airlines -who have thus found a way around the massive global pilot shortage everybody keeps predicting but never happens- they'll flock regardless of how crappy the terms are. The crux of the problem is that there is still a lingering belief that this is somehow a 'dream job'. Until the average outsider understands what this job really is... [The just-above-poverty level initial income, the massive debt, the boring and repetitive nature of the task, the sleep deprivation and general associated health hazards (look up 'aerotoxic syndrome'), the mostly unleveraged risk of losing one's medical at any time (it only happens to others, right?), the stress, the constant questioning of your abilities until retirement, the unstable family life (look up pilot divorce rate), the constantly dwindling terms and conditions, the highly unstable career, the financial fragility of even the best airline out there, etc] ...things won't change. And they won't, so bring on E-scale. Think of all the S/Os you could house in those empty airplanes sitting at HAECO between flights! |
If it hasn't been enough incentive to stop SO's and junior FO's resigning now, reducing the pay is hardly going to improve retention for their replacements.
And, I haven't met any TT SO's who've been surprised at the cost of living in HKG. They did their research. What has changed for some, is companies with terms and conditions that suit them better have started recruiting since they moved to CX. Quite a few now have offers and are resigning. |
Where would an SO go with a P2X rating and P3 time ?

Cathay seems a decent deal for young guys.
Pay little or nothing for flying training, do six years. If you like it (you'll have six years to make that judgement), then stay. Simple. If you don't like the rosters, company, jet lag, Hong Kong (various reasons), Aussies, find the job mind numbing, find the industrial issues worse then leave. Hey, you gave it a go. Leave, get a job in another industry. If you do like flying but don't like Cathay for the reasons above then try for a carrier of your choice. 6 years of free flying with Cathay won't do you any harm in the eyes of BA / QF etc I'm sure. Don't blame the young guys for playing the hand they were dealt. The only difference between a C scaler and a B scaler is timing / age. Same difference between a B scaler and an A scaler I'm sure. Haven't seen many of the new joiners successful getting hired anywhere!! Maybe a 150 hour pilot doing one sector a month isnt the quality that the carreer carriers are looking for??
|
Rather than flogging around the region on the 330 to improve their handling skills (for that sim check at a legacy carrier) these 777 JFOs don't hesitate to tell you that they are on the senior fleet doing Ws.
But for some reason they keep passing their QLs - different standards maybe?

Frank, you are truly a moron, and your comments are contemptible. Your suggestion to undermine the A/B scalers to 'improve' the lot of the C/D scalers: sure, great plan...and all that does is establish even more firmly that the C/D scalers will eventually be undermined in the same way by the E/F scalers.
|
I think Frank was being ironic (my Mac won't do the 'roll eyes' emoticon).
|
....possibly so....
|
Except that, when the C-(or D-) scalers become the majority, there's no saving anymore for the company in raising their benefits while reducing the benefits of the minority who's going to disappear (retire) eventually.
Unless of course if they had to improve the C-scale conditions anyway in order to make them stay. Then saving a little money on the side by hitting the expensive minority would certainly be something they will try. But in summary, if you believe the company would be interested in a middle ground between B- and C-scale, keep dreaming, that would just cost more than it does today. |
Do you guys actually fly at all or do you just spend 24/7 on pprune complaining?
