Inflation and salary expectations
Once again we find ourselves coming out of a contractual period that has had mediocre pay raises. Now, there is firm evidence that inflation is starting to rear its ugly head. The Fed fund rate is nearing 1%, and the real cost of daily goods (food/energy/rent/transportation) is much higher than it was three years ago. Question: not only does the 13th month equate to approximately 8% of ones annual salary, but the current low wages and benefits of the average pilot in CX is now being inexorably eroded each day with increasing inflation. Any pay deal that doesn't meet at least 4% per annum is actually a pay cut. Don't let CX's 'expectation management' cloud your understanding of just how far behind we are falling. Once you lose ground in a given year, you NEVER make it back in this company. Insist on a fair and advancing pay deal. Insist that your close colleagues keep their CC commitment firm and unwavering.

Hong Kong’s Cathay Pacific announces 2 per cent pay rise for non-managerial staff

Just out of curiosity,
What is the biggest pay increase the pilots have ever been given from CX? |
Delta just signed a deal for a 30% pay increase until 2019. Similar deal for Southwest over 4 years. In the mean time pilots in Middle East, HK and Europe still achieving very little it seems like.

" Delta just signed a deal for a 30% pay increase until 2019. "
CaptProp, And the UAL pilots are glad about it: "…aviators at United Continental Holdings Inc. even have a contract provision that calls for pay to be increased if their counterparts at Delta win a better deal." https://www.bloomberg.com/news/artic...ots-union-says |
30% pay rise sounds good doesn't it? However didn't Delta pilots voted in a 32.5% pay cut back a decade ago when the airline was in trouble? That vote saved the company from filing for bankruptcy didn't it?
|
In addition didn't the Delta pilots take a further 14% pay cut the year after the 32.5% pay cut? Imagine the HKAOA trying to sell that to the Hong Kong membership! 42.6% pay cut over 12 months. I reckon you could hear the squealing from London.
Great to see the company trying to get them back towards where they were. |
So can anyone answer what the biggest pay rise CX pilots have ever received?
|
AF... Why is that important or even of interest?
It was a wholly different company in those days, one where the executive sought the best help and was prepared to pay for it. |
"That vote saved the company from filing for bankruptcy didn't it?"
Big Picture, Just for the record: nope Any further comment would be criminal thread drift. |
Remember carefully the names of the pilots who told us to vote NO on the last deal. And never listen to their advice again, ever. Does anyone think we will have a chance now of reviving any of the gains offered? Anything?

+1 iPad
Many of the senior guys advised: when there is money on the table, take it. Still doesn't detract from the piss poor RPs in the last deal however. |
Yep fair call Bafanguy,
The pilot group accepted a massive pay cut to try and help the airline avoid going into chapter 11. Even so, after taking a massive pay cut I believe the airline subsequently filed anyway, along with a number US carriers. The reason the pilots voted in the 32.5% pay cut was to try and help avoid that happening. Are the numbers correct on the pay cuts? 32.5% and 14%? |
If exactly the same offer was presented to you right now how would you vote?
[careful this is an IQ test] |
IPad,
Money on the table? You fool, it was pennies at best for the young guys. It was voted down because of 2 main factors- a Clause saying I can never go into CC and a bundling of a pisspoor RP with HKPA. Would I take the offer now? With Clause 7 remaining, I wouldn't take the offer even if they paid me! Get of the forum, your posts border on the ridiculous. I suggest you stick to reading Jackanory books. |
Noted. IQ well less than 100. Next?

Does anyone think we will have a chance now of reviving any of the gains offered? Anything What gains? Was there a Page missing in the TA that I read? |
Some guys would sell their mom for a few extra bucks.
Ipad is surely one of them. He's so smart but he believes everything he's told by his masters. The sky is falling, like plenty of times before, but this time, it is different. Why do you think we received this important update days before the negotiations are about to resume? |
Look at his/her Post history which only started March this year.
AT using a moniker to rally the troops no doubt. About as useful as The HEDGEhogg's intimidating letter circa same time. These clowns should try spending time focusing on their own mess rather than playing silly buggers with the Pilots. |
It's probably wise not to listen to or trust anybody whose modus operandi is to rattle cages and sprout "expectation management" slogans.
Just the same old management tricks pandered by some contemptible underlings. |
GFC, SARS, Asian Currency Crisis when CX was flying 747s around with 80 pax. Any of you geniuses spot the underlying difference this time?
|
True, hedging was a stuff up and that put the airline on the back foot. However have you noticed that, due in part to low fuel costs, the LCCs have expanded rapidly and are nibbling at our heals? Does anyone think they will go away? If we bury our heads in the sand we will end up like Pan Am. My point was we should have grabbed what was on offer this year because it ain't going to get better from here on in.
|
We, HKPA pilots, should have grabbed what was on the table while the rest of you pay for it with a set of crap RPs and a clause 7 allowing no leverage with the new CMP system.
Is that what you meant? Come on. Show our managers you're worth more than that. Your goodwill and career invested in the company are worth more than the meager raise in HKPA they were offering. |
How's our leverage doing so far? How many $ has it cost all our pilots with no HKPA rise for years and no pay rise this year for anyone? Real dollars lost by all. We think the HK landlords stupid and greedy for leaving an apartment empty for years as they are not prepared to accept the current market rent but demand more because they are delusional about its worth....
PS I doubt that you would have ever read the RP and understood how they mesh in with our COS, the AFTLS, CAP371, and the roster |
Ipad,
You'd be burying your head in the sand if you accepted what the company offers. |
Don't feed the Troll...

hmmmm, real cash in the back pocket of every pilot, vs planning for doomsday....
Clause 7 vs the majority of the RPs in our COS? You have only been here for 5 minutes if you do not know how long and hard we have fought for this holy grail. |
real cash in the back pocket |
