Narrow seats can be more comfortable?

Cathay Pacific to introduce 10-abreast seating in its Boeing fleet

Chu explained he wanted to offer the best in economy seats to ensure customers felt comfortable in the smaller seats.

“Slots are very scarce,” Chu said. “We want to generate more seats per slot, that’s the key thing. That’s why we are doing it. It’s very important we do it.”

I like his thinking. This guy will go far.

There are not enough passengers willing to pay a premium for Cathay. The passengers willing to pay more for nine-abreast either aren’t willing to pay enough or are not numerous enough,” he said.
Does this guy think that CX are going to reduce the ticket price for 10 abreast?

“We want to generate more seats per slot, that’s the key thing. That’s why we are doing it. It’s very important we do it.” said Chu, who was seen to have an Airbus brochure under his arm espousing the 850 seat all economy A380.

The Low Cost transformation continues.

Move over, Air Asia and Scoot, there's a new cattle carrier in town.

Next step: "It'll be $20 for that glass of water, sir"...

Zapp_Brannigan 2nd Oct 2016 09:20

If you want more seats, get a fu*&in' larger aircraft!

Oh, but they all got 4 engines, and fuel is too cheap, which is a good thing, or not (I don't remember).

These guys should get the award for worst decision-makers of the decade!

God, please let someone take over from this silly man.

CXisms

"Narrow seats can be more comfortable"
"It's good we stuffed up our fuel hedging because that means fuel is cheaper"
"Age 65 will lower time to command"
"There's no money in freight"

Any more?

"Just a few points . More for my benefit than your"
"Here is your ticket, gate 70 , they have started boarding , you must hurry"
"I think AT will be good, things should turn around here"

New Seats

This place is so predictable. Put it all together and follow the money (er laundry); CX, CPCS, HAECO, HAESL, HAS, Headland, etc. etc....

Who do you think is going to make the money from supplying or refitting the aircraft with new "product" ???? Take a guess...

Did you all guess correctly ??

Realistically the stupid/bad management/dont know what they're doing etc... thing to do would have been to stick with 9 when all our main competitors are doing 10. As observed by one of the CAPA guys that are quoted, the industry experts thought we were crazy staying with 9. On the bright side, it's nice to see them not chipping away at our benefits for a change.

AB335 3rd Oct 2016 10:15

Our commander in chief will probably fit in those 17-inch seat comfortably, for the rest of us the fatty? Not so much

Foxdeux 3rd Oct 2016 15:04

Can't say that I didn't see this coming. It's the industry standard to have 10 abreast on 777 economy class, just like how points systems are now based on the price of your ticket rather than the actual mileage. It's a shame but it keeps tickets cheap for the most part. No more YYZ-HKG for me on the 777. I'll take YYZ-YVR-HKG on their A350-900.

If I recall, it was AAB at QR who said that customers cared more about legroom than seat width. If that's true, then the news will hardly be noticed except by plane geeks and industry pros. Also, if customers really voted with their wallet on 10-abreast, most airlines which already had it in place would have reversed it. Unless their is collusion against the consumer by the industry, but that would not be legal....

The problem with CX's CEO is that he seems to dislike both customers and pilots. He can't have both, he should pick a side and continue to alienate the side which he does not select.

TOFFAIR 4th Oct 2016 06:14

Will they introduce the A380 due to Slots shortage?

OK4Wire 4th Oct 2016 07:07

They should, but that would be logical.

betpump5 4th Oct 2016 07:39

It is widely known that CX did pop down to KL to take a batch of A380s off Malaysian for a price that only the likes of the Swire Group can negotiate.

Emirates got wind of the deal and stopped it - as they didn't want CX lowering the global price of second hand A380s.

I dont actually believe this rumour. I mean its not like CX to dumb down the industry by paying rock bottom prices for aircraft and pilots....

broadband circuit 4th Oct 2016 13:19

I heard they negotiated a rock bottom price, but they were still too expensive due some issues we have with the price of fuel..........
