Wildlife Crime / Shark fin NOTOCs please?

As pilots and signature to the various NOTOCs that get handled every day, I am asking you to kindly please scrutinize these for carriage of shark fin, which will nominally be listed under "Dry Product".

Scan pdf or photo copies of NOTOCs and/or any photos of CX shark fin as cargo can be securely and anonymously e-mailed to [email protected]

All NOTOCs and or photos received will be treated in the strictest confidence, and marker pen black out to obscure sensitive personal data is no problem.

Photos of shark fin on the tarmac or already loaded on board are particularly welcome, as management insist that shark fin has been banned, but we in this community know otherwise.

Hong Kong shark fin shippers are known to renew contracts with existing clients to continue to carry shark fin into HKG. Additionally, a proper audit of the airway bill will highlight what you are realistically carrying. It may take time to procure from the handling agent but is small price to pay if you end up unknowingly flying illegal shark fin or worse.

In addition to shark fin, please kindly look out for other endangered wildlife?

For example; wildlife hunting trophies from Africa, pre-Convention ivory from Europe, lion bone from South Africa destined for China, live corals plus any other endangered species. Anything suspicious! Coral often gets carried with live tropical fish for the triad-run aquarium trade, where the fish are utterly expendable and the coral is prized for the jewelry trade.

Once again, copies of NOTOCs can be securely and anonymously e-mailed to [email protected]

And once again, all NOTOCs and or photos received will be treated in the strictest confidence, and marker pen black out to obscure sensitive personal data is no problem.

Thank you all!

I would also like to highlight the outrageous use of palm oil in our nuts and other catering and products on board.

I would guess the NOTOC wouldn't have dry goods listed, it tends to have dangerous goods and live (alive) goods only.

They don't even list highly spontaneously combustible Lithium batteries anymore because they've been deemed 'safe' (read: profitable), so why would they list dried shark fins, or any of the other illegal contraband they conveniently close their eyes on since it's even 'safer'...

Strange as it sounds, dry product on the NOTOC can reveal fin and or bone. If in doubt, have a peek at the Airway bill!!

…and places where we still ship fin from..CMB. Male…DXB, the latter I believe comes via India..out of interest, Air Fiji still fly fin into HKG..anything for a buck eh!!?

NoSharkFin 11th Apr 2016 10:14

Anything to make a quick buck indeed. This, from an article in the SCMP a few weeks ago...

[In a statement, a Cathay Pacific spokeswoman confirmed the airline was continuing to carry shark fin although she stressed shipment volumes were “minimal” last year and in “single-digit tonnes compared with a few hundred back in 2011”.]

Cathay Pacific slammed over ?sustainable? shark fin policy | South China Morning Post

"Minimal"? Single digit tonnes"... really???

Pucka 15th Apr 2016 07:01

When you consider that the "average" fin might weigh around 100G…that makes for a lot of fins and a hell of a lot of sharks…and to say that CX will only take "product" from SUSTAINABLE fisheries..is madness!!! who has ever heard of shark farming?? certainly not me!!

What is it with Shark-Fin Soup for the Chinese?
Does it cure erectile dysfunction and increase virility - just like tiger penis?

I tried it once years ago and I'm afraid it didn't make me any more vital, attractive or potent.
Perhaps I should've tried smoking it.

Oh, great! Another shark-hugger! Am I going to hell for spraying ants, mosquitoes and cockroaches for no other reason than too kill them, too?
