Pilots at German airline Lufthansa vote for strike

Pilots at Lufthansa have voted to strike in a long-running dispute over pay and working conditions.

The pilots' union, Vereinigung Cockpit (VC), said more than 90 per cent of its members voted in favour of the industrial action.

The union, which represents more than 5,000 pilots, said it would give the public at least 48 hours notice before any strike.

And it says no walkouts are planned, as yet, for the Easter period.

The pilot's chief negotiator, Thomas Sturm told journalists: "None of us really wants to strike and we've been negotiating very patiently, but our patience has run out."

Lufthansa, which is under pressure to cut costs, has already agreed pay deals with ground staff and cabin crew.

To be honest, the HK union has voted for Contract compliance; it's just been ignored by the union leaders....

Even if the union leaders did what their members told them to do and launched contract compliance, the Lufthansa union would still laugh at our pathetic efforts.

That's because it is a UNION with all the concomitant labour law protection that the EU provides. Did you really think the Colonial Administration here would have set out their stall to make industrial relations an easy matter? By the same token did you think the SAR government would have improved on that ? We have limited industrial muscle here. We have to crack on with that and CX know it. The local populace hate us and don't give a sh$t so long as they get airborne. If that's with HNA, CZ, MQ they don't care. End.

Yet other worker groups have had some success with going on strike in Hong Kong.

Who hates us? This things are in your mind cause management put them there.

There IS labour protection in HK. You CAN strike.

There's a myriad of protections.

Excuses like yours are the issue. Grow a back bone. Call your mate. Tell him to. Have him call his.. DONE. Solidarity.

Get on with it.

Your right on. Tired of the cannots around here. The defeatist attitude is why we are loosing every battle. Glad I never had to share a fox hole with you. Would have ended up dead or captured at the first sight of trouble.

In principle that's fine. Unfortunately there's enough ® individuals in this organization to undermine the efforts or integrity of others to make our industrial efforts appear benign. There will come a time when they realize their families and colleagues are worth the fight, personal intestinal fortitude is necessary, where substance of character counts, but then again a G Day is day you can sell out to to the lowest bidder and screw everyone else. What's wrong with that?

Who hates us?
 

Actually jacobus, you're wrong. The local populace don't hate us. The like us, they like round eyes flying CX aircraft, they like CX local pilots as well, as they believe it's safer on CX than certain other carriers in the region.

Twotigers is spot on in his response to you.

Really its hard to be strong and united when the company has divided the crew body intentionally over the years.


When you have no savings possible for junior crew members to weather a strike they will cross the line fastest back to company when they drop the blackmail options out....i.e."cross the picket line....we will give you a command". Nothing like a landlord knocking and a baby crying and no money in the cupboard because they thought joining CX meant they had made it but discovered their wages and living had sunk when they got here.


Or do any of the HK home buyers got any money to cover their mortgage for more than say 2 months? I doubt many do with school bills to pay.


This is not being defeatist but its a statement that a union is powerful when you have nothing left to lose....and at the moment the company knows too many pilots have their fingers in so many pies and their up to their necks with debt that there would be no massive revolt that could keep its steam up to pull CX into line.


Pilots grumble about the FAU being united and strong.....well its easy for a large majority of cabin crew. They have little debt, only seniors have family and their money they earn is relatively small that they live with family or boyfriends and husbands who provide them the support network when the company wants to go war. The company big gun is ... you don't get paid......umm yeah we don't get paid much at all anyway so we will wait till you come to your senses. Going home to sleep.


Our investment in our career is a very hard thing to throw down a strike to, thus the company erodes and eats its way thru what was established years in the past. A bit here ...only effects that small portion.....we will adjust this it only effects Second Officers. Oh that housing benefit only effects Home buyers not renters. The list goes on. And every time something is taken from one part of the aircrew body, as long as it doesn't effect us we don't care. We should but we generally don't.


Till people look beyond their own selfish day to day needs and spread their eyes wider at the big deal and are passionate enough to say Screw it this stops.....it will be as it has been the last 20 years.

CX will buckle before we ever stop work.

The cost to them daily is significantly more than the cost to us.
We have families, they have shareholders.

Our 'demands' are absurdly low given the normal raises people in HK are receiving.

Storm in a teacup.. if only you can stop the defeatist attitude.
