Been here a while, but this is the worst year so far.

Air Pollution in Asia: Real-time Air Quality Index Visual Map

Bushfiva 5th Mar 2014 03:50

The Tokyo air quality is the remnants of stuff that blew in from China last week, when it had its first P2.5 alert ever (in total, 10 prefectures had alerts). The stuff came in over Kansai from northern China, then headed up the Pacific side of the coast. Some kindergartens were closed and at-risk categories were advised to stay home without ventilation.

Flying into RJFF a while ago and they had blowing sand on the ATIS. After landing when talking to the ground staff, they advised that it was sand that had blown in from China!

Pollution in China so bad, that now estimated 15-25% of pollution in LA is blown all the way transpac, and that the amount of haze over China is causing climate change, akin to a large volcanic eruption.

So, thank them. By pumping so much into the sky, they are actually slowing global warming! (because less sunlight reaching the ground)

...and consumers get cheap goods. Win-win!

SMOC 5th Mar 2014 23:49

I think there's an opportunity for a pollution tax on China, HK would become a TAX free zone :ok:

China could borrow from the HKTA's aborted advertising campaign launched the day SARS started..."China It Will Take Your Breath Away" or perhaps one recently launched by the Russian Tourism Authority.."Visit Us Before We Visit You".
