iPads

So now the iPads have to be stowed away and secure for take-off and landing. Just when the Ipad is at its most usual :ugh:

Max Reheat 6th Aug 2013 11:59

Usual? or Useful?

FERetd 6th Aug 2013 12:09

Terminology

Max Reheat:- Useful usually I believe, but could be Usually useful.

But don't get it wrong lest the 3rd floor descend upon you! :)

Checked and Set?

How is "stowed" defined?

CokeZero 6th Aug 2013 16:26

Nicely done Silberfuchs :D

So true!

PEDs

Sorry I'm confused (as usual), why are Performance Enhancing Drugs allowed on the flight deck but not for entertainment purposes?

What makes you say this? I've never seen anyone reading Ops A or any part of the FCOM suite during take-off and landing so presumably you're talking about charts? What's wrong with the current system until the EFB comes (if it ever does)? As far as I can see this is a positive move, as if you need to find something you can now do your .pdf search on your iPad and then look at the book for the definitive reference - or am I not being cynical enough?

I think it is the common problem of posters clicking the 'Submit' button without checking what they have written for spelling and syntax. Or maybe a 'liquid lunch', or English is a second language.

The new Airbus paper manuals are dreadful, huge and unwieldy in the cockpit, more of a hazard than an iPad, and you need one anyway to magnify and read the shocking 'blueprint' style systems diagrams.

Correct. Commendably self-aware. You must work on your cynicism and avoid the entirely reasonable, measured posts you keep ruining FH with - enough now, treat yourself, join in with a little tantrum. :ok:

Seriously well thought out plan

Well Well Well ! The ipad has been certified for use in the flight deck by numerous Aviation Agencies worldwide and is permitted for use at all critical stages of flight. In most cases as the primary and only reference to charts and manuals .

But not here at CX. we have to rely on crappy charts with information scattered all over the place , no area charts , poorly depicted terrain data and taxi markings superimposed over a grey background, making it almost impossible to read at night. Don't believe me look at the taxi chart for PEK good luck reading that on a dark stormy night .

Me thinks, they don't want us getting used to a well proven system that works a treat, and in my opinion enhances flight safety. Because then we would naturally compare it to the upcoming release of the NEW and IMPROVED EFB and be very aware of its shortcomings.
Not that I am holding my breath for the release of the EFB

Just like the headsets over China ,this is another well thought out knee jerk reaction .

So if I should have an emergency situation and I don't have the time to get the charts from the NAV Bag or the airfield charts aren't available. But I can get them from my IPAD in seconds, I am not permitted to use them

I have a suggestion . Scrap the EFB, save yourself a ton of cash and configure the aircraft to take an Ipad, Company issue, so there is no problem with up to date information. It's not rocket science simply the 21st century

As for turning off all bluetooth devices, am I to assume that this also applies to the passengers . On any flight there are upward of at least 5 devices that have bluetooth enabled the entire flight . So from now on I must delay the departure until everyone has their bluetooth turned off to comply with the new ruling.

Yes, but there's not much else CX can do (apart from this latest NTC) until iPads are approved by the regulator in Hong Kong. Given the glacial pace at which HKCAD operates, don't expect to see iPads approved for standalone use any time soon.

oriental flyer 7th Aug 2013 14:19

Have they even tried

Has CX even approached the CAD about Ipads ? I would wager a pretty safe bet it has never been raised with the licensing authority . They don't seem to be interested in getting it approved because we are waiting and waiting and waiting for the mythical EFB

BalusKaptan 7th Aug 2013 16:13

So, while the likes of Qantas are now consigning the EFB to the museum and using iPads CX is about (at some stage) going to introduce the latest technology...EFBs to the operation!!! Give me a break.
