Cabin Crew Base Opening

I see that the company has just opened a cabin crew base in NY. It's in Cabin crew direct. So how come they can get it so quick and we are still waiting......

dogleg 15th Jun 2013 06:26

Interesting...

Due to 3rd non-stop flight going daily in Sept and the saving of hotel rooms and allowance (and lack of hotel room availability). No radiation issues apparently... Same would apply to pilots so why are we waiting??

rick.shaw 15th Jun 2013 18:25

Oh please! Are you that naïve???? Do the words 'power', 'bargaining chip' or 'AFTLS's' give you a clue?

CokeZero 15th Jun 2013 20:06

So basing are going ahead then. Just a matter of time before the rest of the bases open up then. Europe, US, Aus and NZ should be opening up within the next month then if it good enough for the Cabin Crew, its good enough for us ;).............. Yeah Right

BuzzBox 15th Jun 2013 22:29

Yep, they could open up the bases again if they wanted to, but why would they when there's the chance of using bases as a bargaining chip for new COS or AFTLS? They've been silent on the issue for some time now - that surely means they're plotting something and I'm guessing it won't be to our liking.

Do we have a deal for you

Management have kept the bases closed for 3 years so that there is a lot of built up demand for them. They then offer us a deal. Bases open again if we sign away housing in HKG.

3 years ago NR started floating the idea that the company shouldn't have to pay for more than one 'house' in HKG. He also asked 'when is an expat no longer an expat'.

New joiners are on a crap housing deal. We will be soon too. Just watch all the guys who have made their money out of the HKG housing market selling up and heading off to their base slots, selling out those left in HKG.

Divide and pineapple!

When a pilot from the 3rd floor, who is vocal about how he will be getting a base in AUS soon, leaves management and joins the 777 fleet so he can commute it shows us a bit about the basing situation.

Do NOT think for one millisecond that if a NY base was to open for the pilots that it'd be just that - knowing the previous history of this management, you WILL be required to give up something contractual and it WILL be more than just your housing allowance in HKG. I wouldn't be surprised that you'd be asked to sign a waiver or forego your EFP after 84 hours. Unfortunately Herbert set the wheels in motion before his exodus. :ouch:

According to one of our now ex-C&T who has returned back to Oz for another Company, he was told flat out by our FTM 777 that bases for pilots wanting to leave HKG would not be opening up in the near future. At least for the next 5-10 years. Of course this is "his" (FTM) opinion but considering the aforementioned quote it may put things into a bit more perspective :hmm:

cxorcist 16th Jun 2013 07:00

Well, that's 5-10 more years of coughing up expat benefits for unhappy pilots vs cheap and happy pilots on bases. Seems like a no brainer to me.

IMO, anything with Herbert's name attached to it is going to be avoided like the plague. No?

LongTimeInCX 16th Jun 2013 08:20

You mean apart from his leaving party ?
Heard it was a sell out - standing room only.
Damn, that phone box must have been packed!

rick.shaw 16th Jun 2013 13:45

Herbert.... Herbert.....

Just can't seem to get that Star Trek scene out of my head....

;)

If it brings shame to CX's name, then I'm in agreement, as they're sensitive to how the Media portrays them.

If it saves them $$$ then I'm inclined to say that they'll use Herbert's ideologies and claim the fame for themselves (middle management that is).

....it's what I have observed over the years since I joined :(

Bases were never a problem until tax authorities started to get involved. Onshoring has caused big problems primarily because different jurisdictions have different rules and trying to comply with opposing rules is untenable for an international aviation company.

The only place where bases will open in the future is North America. When the 49ers tried to get a ruling against CX the judge rejected the claim on the basis that CX were a HK company and US jurisdiction did not extend to HK. Had the UK employment tribunal done the same with the Crofts case we would not be caught in the current tax vice between the UK and HK.

In 10 years time there will be no need for bases and most of those now on bases will either have retired or moved to HK. The bases are withering on the vine for all but the North Americans
