As the A330/340 cockpit was designed by Porsche, other designers are keen to join the party. The following headset, by de la Renta, is often used on Moscow trips:

The following is only to be used during controlled rest:

We're seeing more and more of our recent recruits using these:

And, finally, some of our more, how can I put, er 'self-confident' Captains and FOs prefer these:

In WW2 the radio operators used to wear the headphones over the No.01 hat perhaps we should wear our hats in the cockpit too, HC would be happy. Only in CN.

This I feel particularly suitable for long-haul long-sleevers, to absolutely ensure they ignore the S/O

"Dear Henry,
Am flying to China tonight.
Have I got to wear my headset on both ears, or just on one?
You ntc is not very clear about it.
Please clarify"

Kasompe 23rd Jun 2013 02:49

Having recently flown a European route through China with the headsets on, I can honestly say that there is MORE risk to missed calls with them on than there is with them off.
The constant barbed wire chatter is now MORE concentrated, resulting in you turning down the volume, and also, talking with the intercom actually drowns out the sound of radio calls.
Also, as a result of having to switch on the speaker whilst the other pilot left the flightdeck, the VERY issue of the speaker on with the intercom latched, with resulting muted speakers, occurred.
So, Henry, whilst your kneejerk reaction to a problem probably was meant well, please do expect to be making MANY more visits, cap in hand, to China.
As an aside, perhaps we could deal with the REAL reasons for communications problems in China......funny how it doesn't happen ANYWHERE else.....rather than cave in to the powers that be up there.:ugh:

Also, do all pilots have to wear headsets or just the PM?
