A proper send off
 

I've often felt that we could do a little better in the retirement send-off category....this is how I hope to go out.

Nice story, but cue all the FO's complaining about doddery old fools blocking promotion until age 65...

When I read the name I thought it was the Irish dude with the same name leaving cx. I was also going to celebrate with him...then I realized that I was just dreaming!

45 years at one airline! Pretty hard to match in today's world. He must of joined Delta at 20, minimum age for a commercial license is 18. That was the golden age of commercial flying, before deregulation. He must be one of the last guys to have a pension. Best wishes to his well earned retirement.

Please, it's 'must HAVE'

Actually, his pension is all but worthless after the bankruptcy. Only the portion backed by the government (PBGC) will be paid. The smart pilots got out before the restructure by cashing out their pensions via early retirements.

What a great send off! THAT WAS CLASS.

Some airlines are far from that nice & have a trick up their sleeve:- have heard of it from a guy who was warned & later experienced it:

Final flight & you're met with or flew with a senior pilot. He offers you a glass of champagne/beer/other either in the cockpit or at the airport office. The unwitting retiring Capt thinks its awfully nice & takes the offer.

Drinking while on duty (on blocks + 15 or 30 mins....) and/or drinking while in uniform.

Fired.

Loss of certain entitlements or final month's pay in the contract world.

My buddy politely turned them down having been warned.
