buzz box 29th Oct 2012 07:27

Wouldnt we be playing into their expectation management hands by even contemplating no 13th month? Better if its not even discussed i would have thought.

Just like in the old Soviet Union: If they pretend to pay me, i'll pretend to work....

Bye Bye Baby 1st Nov 2012 07:49

Bugger all, but expect management to get a rise.

Two hopes - Bob Hope and no hope.

MrClaus 4th Nov 2012 02:08

There is no way they won't pay.

Most of the worker bees have the same monthly salaries that a swire prince spends on wine every week. They depend on it to pay tax and for Chinese New Year. Both are sacred.

Now the bonus, that's another matter altogether.

777300ER 4th Nov 2012 02:45

No 13th month would likely be a big mistake as clearly morale is at a tipping point these days. Most front line staff that I encounter have a serious goodwill shortage already.

CXChildLabour 4th Nov 2012 02:56

LOL, been here long Claus? My bet is 2 weeks for 13th month, then 2 weeks or 6000 whichever is lower for discretionary... that way the lower salary staff still get their money and the overpaid pilots still get screwed, management gets a huge bonus for a job well done... I'm surprised they didn't put that in our CoS last time round...

When will we know?

When do they usually announce it? Also when can we bid for next year's leave?Want to know what sort of holiday I can plan. A ferry to TST or a cruise of the Mediterranean. :}

Thirteenth month is normally announced in early December, about 5 weeks from now. A few things to consider,

1. Whilst not wishing to reignite the debate about the last pay deal, it is worth remembering that under that deal, this year is the first year 13th month would include 84 hrs HDP. For many, this actually represented a fair "chunk" of that pay deal, so if 13th month is not paid the "value" of that pay deal is disminished markedly.

2. The 13th is also p-fundable.

Reading nearly every communication from the company, expectations are being managed, and should 13th month not be paid it would be worth asking yourself some questions prior to May 2013, being the date the embargo on taking action over pay expires. HK pilots need to ask themselves;

1. When was the last time I had a meaningful pay review?

2. How has my pay movement compared to other Level D employees or indeed senior management figures, particularly we take into account the years 13th months was not paid (or capped) and the haphazard nature of profit share. Management bonuses and senior management incentives seem less haphazard?

3. When I factor out HDP, 13th month, profit share, how much of my total salary package is actually guaranteed, and how much can be "removed" by the company when they deem times are "marginal" or ill-health strikes?

4. No doubt management will argue now is not the time to be talking about raising costs, however when in the in past 20 years has there ever been a time they would be receptive to talks about pay rises. Is their argument not becoming a bit tired when we see the expansion and prosperity not only in CX, but HK generally..... As a yardstick, has your pay kept pace with your perceived ability to buy in mid-levels?

Food for thought.........

Well said Liam

You are spot on with your post. With contracts being whittled away without even a demur from the ranks, Paris closed and basings gone, no chance of buying into the HKG property market due to the high deposit required, a totally useless P Fund that won't pay for your baked beans and incontinence diapers in your old age,, why are we putting up with this? We must pull our fingers out and stand up for our contracts and futures because we have already lost most of the real benefits of living and working in Hong Kong and in this industry. I agree that next years May embargo must be a watershed moment for us or if we do nothing we are rooted and may as well try for the KMB Airbus jobs!
