Typhoon Vincente

Looking at the complete and utter chaos at the airport and Kitty City, with a level of incompetence that I didn't think was possible from screw control I can only conclude that this was the first time EVER that operations were disrupted by a typhoon. :ugh:

cxorcist 25th Jul 2012 00:38

The only thing that surprises me about it is that you are surprised.

Mr. Bloggs 25th Jul 2012 00:48

Any comments from the pilots that actually landed in the typhoon from say 1800 onwards?

Should the operations been stopped sooner?

Please arrange the following in logical order

pissup brewery a organize Couldn’t in a

Crew control and IOC are still trying!!!

Oh there will be a dumpling-slurping meeting at kitty city to solve the issues, the solution written on a napkin.

Unfortunately the next breath of wind will blow the napkin out of club catastrophe and we are back where we started.

What type of Caring Company(sic), stand their flight deck and cabin crew down at the airport at 02:00, with no transport to get back home ( due to signal 10), no means of getting their checked bags AND then expect them back on duty 10-12 hours later

Good thing they value " safety" as a priority during all operations

The same type of company that gets all those crew show up the next day without any of them calling unfit for duty.

You can't blame them for trying it on. You can only blame those who blindly follow it and accept it as "orders" instead of "requests". If that minimum callout was unsatisfactory, the crew should have spoken up.

I can tell you for sure that I would not consider myself off duty until getting back my bag and being on my way home in such circumstances. I look at that as my responsibility. As I get home, I would contact crew control and advise them of my report time.

Wind was only 30-40 knots down the runway at 2000L.
There's another 15 knots at least, before CX would stop operating.

Two days later still have not got my checked bags back!!!!

otis cornbread 25th Jul 2012 08:15

Told I was on reserve at 15:00. They started calling me at 12:00. Yep, nice. I was told to go to the airport lost and found to see if they have my bag. Anybody know where we are actually supposed to get the bags we checked in at Cathay City?

AnAmusedReader 25th Jul 2012 09:15

where are the bags

Last time I had to collect bags it was at the CX office one (or two) floors above the Starbucks at check-in area A.

744drv 25th Jul 2012 12:48

I think it is disgraceful that these bags are not brought back landside .... why airside (????) these bags havn't been out of the SAR. After getting an exemption to have them brought landside CX should then at the very least get them to CX City. Frankly I think they should be loaded into a van and delivered to crew as required!! "Thanks to our crew for going the extra mile during these testing times .... but sod you if it inconveniences us"

SloppyJoe 25th Jul 2012 14:42

Just read the email and was thinking exactly the same. Passengers have their bags brought to their door but crew have to go into T1 to collect the bags after going to work during a typhoon.

A disgrace.

Cavallier 25th Jul 2012 16:27

For info guys just picked up my bag. They are all in the cx baggage office level 6. You can take the lift that is next to the travel exchange at exit B arrivals. Took speaking too 6 people at Cx city before I was told we have no system in place.

Well time to make one then!! Shame

joblow 26th Jul 2012 05:43

I have to ask the question . Where were the DFO and GMF during all of this
Well , they were BOTH on leave at the same time . What company would let both the senior managers go on leave at the same time ?. I'm sure that if one of them had been available most of the disruption would have been avoided

BusyB 26th Jul 2012 06:26

Joblow,

Dream on:mad:

Arfur Dent 26th Jul 2012 07:24

Let's not forget that, whilst on leave, they 'never cease to be amazed by the turnout of willing volunteers'. Another rum punch please waiter.

on a different topic:

did anyone check the JTWC in the buildup to Vicente?
Were they better up to speed with the predictions of the severity of the situation or were they just as surprised and lagging behind the events as the HKO was?

BusyB 26th Jul 2012 10:34

Strangely enough CNN weather at 1800 HK time said their forecaster did not agree that Vicente was going WNW and said it was routing North. HK didn;t change their forecast at all as far as I can see.:(

AsiaMiles 26th Jul 2012 10:48

HKO v JTWC

The JTWC forecast a more westerly track and maximum of Category 1 Typhoon. The HKO amended their forecast almost every half hour which would have made planning difficult for anyone.

The Typhoon went from Category 1 to Category 4 in less than six hours just south of Hong Kong and this was not forecast.
