Dragonair Second Officers

For the past week I have been scouring the internet for information on the role of the Second Officer at KA. The information I have is that KA do indeed employ (direct entry 1500hrs+) second officers and that they are allowed to fly sectors as opposed to a pure cruise-relief role.

The questions I have been unable to answer are:

1. What fleet do they fly on (320/330/320&330)?

2. What are the T & C's applicable to this position?

3. How long is the expected period to be upgraded to FO?

4. Do they receive a P2X rating or is that a Cathay only concept?

I have placed this in the main forum with the interest of receiving a rapid response from KA employees or other knowledgeable folk that happen to see it.

Thanks for your time.

New Second Officers are all going to the A320 Fleet, in the past they went to both fleets, 320 and 330.
New contract in place with effect from April 1st for new joiners - salary scales are the same but there are other changes to the contract the local B scale guys currently have.
12 months to JFO, another 12 months to FO I think.
Rating is not P2X - that's CX only.

Just wondering do anyone know what hours do KA SO log

CX = p2x

KA = SICUS?

AAIGUY 13th Apr 2012 12:37

SO's log actual SIC hrs. or PIC/US if you wish on the legs you fly. Though no airline in the world would take the PIC/US as anything other than FO time.

tchanhk 13th Apr 2012 12:53

So S/O for KA logs SIC but how is it diff from CX p2x I mean they both do the same job?

AAIGUY 13th Apr 2012 13:10

P2X is not a rating. You fly a light twin in Aus. to get it. You can't occupy the seat below 10,000 ft.

KA SO's get a FULL A320 rating. They land/takeoff do everything and log actual time.

Dan Winterland 13th Apr 2012 15:03

They don't do the same job. The KA S/O will operate as any pilot would and gets to log his/her Pilot Flying time as P1 (U/S). The CX S/O will only be able to log the time as P2X. The official Hong Kong CAD logbook has separate columns for P2X time. Other authorities don't even recognise it and it's wasted time if you want to progress your career outside CX.

after 1,500 flight experience, the mpl cadet will be able to unfreeze the atpl...

in theory what kathey describe you will pretty much have to stay with a single airline for a majority of your career? which is fine...

tchanhk 14th Apr 2012 04:42

So Kathey

On top of all the training even after graduate done the 1500 exp
Mpl graduate if they want to be recognise by other airline they would need to do some extra course to fulfill other aviation bodies requirements...I thought u can convert it...

SloppyJoe 14th Apr 2012 05:05

You can convert it but doing so requires passing exams and flight/sim test.

So if you get a gig and your not from HK with a frozen/unfrozen ICAO ATPL you are required to sit the HK ATPL exams?

Madp1lot 18th Apr 2012 10:31

beware that CAD doesn't accept frozen ATPL, and on your conversion, you might get downgraded back to CPL (depending on FT).

IMO, SO is good only for the company.. not for the pilot. (no actual flight time experience at a very critical stage - you just learned how to fly and you'll spend the next 4 years or so... not flying).

As Kathey said, if you already have an ATPL, it means you already have a minimum of 1500h and you're probably a senior F/O somewhere. Aviation is all about upgrading, not downgrading.

aviator23 18th Apr 2012 22:45

Yeah just seeing what is out there at this stage, heaps of mates are currently doing the jump to the Cathay SO gig.

I've got about 6 months until i have an unfrozen Australian ATPL but would really like to do some flying overseas if possible.
