Wine Hong Kong

Just bought a Bordeaux at the airport for 300$, "special price". Stupidly I only googeled the brand on the way home, it sells for 70$(!) in the U.K.

Why is Hong Kong wine so overpriced? I understand tax and duty has been abolished a couple of years ago, or hasn't it?
Any tips? With the industry as it is I need at least my glass in the evening..

Caveat Emptor........ Let the Buyer Beware!
Come back to Oz, no need to spend $300.00 for a great drop of Red!

Dan Winterland 20th Mar 2012 02:36

It's a 'special price' for gullible people.

Seems like they found one!

hongkongfooey 21st Mar 2012 01:43

Greenslopes :ok: 20AUD for a great south oz red, that's about 50000hkd tho ;)

Yes, it was very strange how they abolished wine duty and not one shop or restaurant dropped their prices 1 cent, who'd have thought it in HK, good will capital of the world.

Benfolds ? Great band

And if you are a S/O on the 'new' package your supplier of choice is 7-11 for 2 cans of beer, once a week. Best had on an empty stomach (no fish head soap and rice that day) to get the biggest buzz for your bucks.

hongkongfooey,
Agree with you .Just another sacrifice we pay for prostituting ourselves by basing ourselves here in H.K. What we do for $$$$$$$.Along with the polution, rude savages, spitting, long humid summers, typhoons etc. However, it is our choice so we can't complai I guess .Though I
c Austan't understand your comment of $Au. 20 = 5000 H.K.:ugh:

Come back to Oz
As a regular visitor to Australia, I get the distinct impression that Oz wine is cheaper in the UK. I guess production exceeding local sales has to be sold in markets where there's a lot of international competition.
I'd a glass of Rioja recently which I was told cost £3.99 (AUD $6.02). Not great but not dreadful either. We buy a decent St Hallett Shiraz for £9.50 (AUD $14.35) so it's a bit of a shock even in Dan Murphy's. I suspect ours, which is sold as an OB, is St Hallett Blackwell Shiraz ($31.95).

Watsup, just a slight exaggeration of the value of the dunny paper they pay you in V the AUD ;)

I am a collector of fine wine and living in HKG makes my hobby very affordable and dare I say very profitable. To make the most out of the change in duty laws, you need to do your research and know your wine. Many punters don't and blindly buy wines from Watsons or other retailers.winesearcher.com is a great way to make sure you aren't being ripped off. Punch in your wine in the search engine and check international pricing.

On Duty Free. Rip Off!!! Except Champagne. However, airport Champagne is a generally a no-go for collectors as the cellaring provenance comes into question- it is often cooked! Now that said, Duty Free in Auckland with your CX discount will get you some nice premium Kiwis. Ata Rangi, Martinborough etc. Expect to pay 40USDish.

The trick is to cut out the HKG middleman and buy direct and ship direct. I pay about 40% less than the same wine at Watsons! Buy from English retailers ( Berry Brothers, Armit, Fine & rare ) when wines are on sale and they will arrange door to door shipping.

For fine dining, I always BYO and pay corkage. I accept up to 300HKD corkage charge and still come out thousands in front if drinking high end wine.

HKG Fooey.

Sorry mate, you are gauged in Oz by tax. I can buy your $20 Aussie red for $10. The bizarre thing is I buy the wine that has been shipped to England and to HKG and it's still half price. Extreme example below!

Cheers everyone. Drink Well!!

125£= $200AUD for Grange with HKG Delivery in an a/c container. It's 500-600AUD in Oz. Just an example. You are totally gauged in Australia.

BTW, I am not a Grange collector but the 1996 is exceptional.

I can't really understand the concept behind collecting wine. the wine I buy is never really around long enough to be considered a collector's item!

Gnadenburg 27th Mar 2012 02:33

You don't know what you are missing out on Dan. I had this bottle from your birth year the other night at the Hong Kong Club- drinking beautifully though fades quickly with a swirl!

Some good info here. Thanks gents. I buy my single malts online from the UK. Best way to do it.

joebanana 29th Mar 2012 11:03

Dan, after all these years I still haven't got through to you ;)

rennaps 29th Mar 2012 11:24

Here in Slovakia I make my own wine and it works out at about 10 cents a litre to make.
I make 750 litres each year :ok:

moosp 29th Mar 2012 16:50

Dan I always like the statistic from Australia that the average time from purchase to consumption of Australian wine is 35 minutes...

If you want to store your cases in Hong Kong I can recommend Crown Wines in Shoulson Hill. They have a club house too with a good restaurant where you can drink your own wines, or they will deliver to the restaurant where you are going to eat if you give them a couple of days notice.

I also often pay the $300 corkage as it is still great value, but then I have been collecting for a long while.
